What is the best war movie?

Depends on the war ;)

I love loads of WW2 movies and would find it hard to pick a favourite although the classics have to be up there! (Great Escape and the like)

I believe "Saving Private Ryan" is worthy of a mention.

Oooooh...I suppose I am patriotic this way and must pick 'Gallipoli' with a young Mel Gibson. It was the first war movie I have ever seen, and is still one I always cry in.

There are more, but I will keep it at that one.

Cross of Iron. James Coburn as Sgt Steiner is cool!

Honorable mentions are Stalingrad (subtitled German language version), Tae Guk Gi: The Brotherhood of War (subtitled Korean language, the dubbed one is crap) and though not movies per se, the HBO Band of Brothers & The Pacific are pretty good too.

WWII band of brothers and the pacific. Hands down two of the best miniseries on WWII.

We were soldiers is another good one.

There's a new one coming out in Feb., I think, called Men of Valor (I think) that looks really good. Supposedly its supposed to star actual navy seals.

A Bridge Too Far
A Bridge Over The River Kwai
Midway
Pearl Harbor--The ORIGINAL Tora Tora Tora

I love all the old war movies but among my favorites are:
- Zulu
- Sgt York
- Audie Murphy Story
- Green Berets
- and too many others to list!!

Dam Busters - just for its historic accuracy

Damn busters was a damn good movie

and while maybe not a war film "Strategic Air Command" is a good movie and allowed Jimmy Stewart's real life experiances as a B-24 wing commander tp be put to use in the film

A few I've seen:

Patton
Saving Private Ryan
The Great Escape
Braveheart
Lawrence of Arabia

Stuff I really need to see:

Bridge over the River Kwai
A Bridge Too Far
All Quiet on the Western Front
Das Boot

Heaven Knows, Mr Allison
The Dirty Dozen

There are more, but I always think of these....
