What's yours? Mine was having kids. Nothing I did before meant a thing after they came around, and everything since is colored/lifted by their eyes watching.

But it's also frankly depressing knowing that the best we can do is not fuck them up too bad...and that we're probably not doing the best we can do.

Yours?

Travelling. I've lived and worked in Sweden, my homeland :), in England, in Canada and currently in France. Seeing how we are all the same in spite of our different cultures, how we all want the same things for ourselves and our children and that most people, taken on an individual basis, are pretty cool.
This is a lovely thread...

Do you like Swedish Fish? I love those things.

Philip Larkin wrote this:

They fuck you up, your mum and dad.
They may not mean to, but they do.
They fill you with the faults they had
And add some extra, just for you.

But they were fucked up in their turn
By fools in old-style hats and coats,
Who half the time were soppy-stern
And half at one another’s throats.

Man hands on misery to man.
It deepens like a coastal shelf.
Get out as early as you can,
And don’t have any kids yourself.

I don't quite agree, but almost almost...

My children, for sure. But for me it's more, witnessing what amazing human beings they've become. I like hanging out with them, they make me laugh and when I'm old they will find me a nice home.

Besides the jest, it is true. None of my educational or career accomplishments even touch the fact that I am raising those two. Not even my sporting accomplishments rate. I used to think the pot of gold was reaching soaring heights in the corporate world. I was very wrong.

I don't think I have a pot of gold, and it's freaking me out a little bit. :(

I never wanted kids. Never disliked them, just was always afraid of having them and not being able to give them everything.

With what my life has been through the past year, I want to work on being in the position to have one.
