Just found an enormous jack jumper nest in the back lawn. These things are nasty!
The nest is about 4m x 2m.
I have mowed over the top of this thing many times, without detecting it's existance.
Today though, the wheel of the mower broke through the top of the nest.
I have poured petrol down the entire area and lit it up, as well as sprinkled borax/icing sugar mix all round the perimeter holes.
If that doesn't work, I may have to call in the professionals - at least one of the kidlets is allergic.

The very definition of nature's ultimate horror has to be you enlisting the aid of a professional vermin killer.

My brain recoils and my skin crawls.

I am one with nature - unless it has the potential to kill me, and is within the house boundary.
Hell, I even relocate spiders rather than kill them!

But these things are really nasty... Jack Jumpers are able to kill one of my kids, and so must die.

I kill for food (one or two beasts a year), I kill for safety (snakes and deadly ants), and I kill for vermin control (bush rats and swallows).
I do not kill indiscriminately.

I even leave the weeds in my garden for the most part.

Burn the little cocksuckers out...fuck could you imagine a thousand of them on you

They really are one of the worst insects. And I never had a clue they were there!
I don't know how many times I have walked over that nest.
But now that the top has been disturbed by the mower falling through, and having checked to see how far the peripheral holes extend, I can see this nest has been there for a long time.
I have to do whatever I can to get rid of it... if the littlest kidley bean gets stung, we are a long way from help :(

I've been checking out real estate deals in Tasmania, but after seeing the wiki on those things I'm gonna rethink.

I've been in Tassie, off and on, since 2003, and this is the first nest I have seen.
And I've lived all over the state, North and South.

What were you looking for?
Property is relatively cheap here, compared to the rest of Oz.

It better be with stuff like that crawling around

I'm not sure where you are... but it still strikes me as hilarious when people from the US freak out about a few insects, when they have puma's, bears, coyotes, rattlesnakes, etc, etc.
I'd never live where there were things like bears wandering around!

Something kind of suburban, for under 200k american. What's the good neighborhood?

I have bears in my backyard...they help keep the coyotes away..saw a mountain lion/puma last year by my cabin..snakes we don't have much of, porcupines all over the place...the Elk and Moose are what you gotta watch for on the highway at night...them are dangerous

How suburban? City? Large country town? North? South?
To me, suburban is within 5 mins of town centre.
But you might think suburban is a 5acre block on the waterfront, within half an hour of town centre.
Which, btw, sometimes you can find for around 150 - 200k. ... especially around Launceston, Devonport and Burnie (all Northern towns, and the weather is better in the North.)

There seems to be so many poisonous and sneaky things! yikes

Then again, my Ogre husband passed a tale on to me-

The man was jogging, after work as usual. It was a fine night, so when his neighbor offered a ride, he said no- I'll walk home.
He felt watched, after he said this to his neighbor. He looked around and he saw many pairs of eyes, reflecting from the lights of the car.
(Pack of coyotes hiding in brush and bushes?) He hurriedly told his neighbor he changed his mind and rushed to get into the passenger seat.
