Can anyone tell me why a story, without any spelling mistakes, would be rejected on those grounds?

I presume the Eds know the difference between English and American English? Or are submissions merely run through a spell checker?

It seems like that rejection also mentioned punctuation. Punctuation in dialogue is the most common grammar rejection, so if the rejection notice includes punctuation, look for those out of place commas. For whatever reason, Laurel is especially hard on those.
