Windmills more effective than manufacturers claim

Nearly two years after Reno started installing energy-producing windmills at city facilities from downtown to Stead, some have proven to be better at generating electricity than others despite claims made by manufacturers.

The city’s seven windmills have so far saved Reno $2,785 in energy costs after generating 25,319 kilowatt-hours of electricity. The windmills were installed between April and October 2010 and cost about $1 million out of a $2.1 million federal energy grant given to the city that was part of the stimulus package approved by Congress in February 2009.

That’s according to data available on Reno’s new “open government” website that tracks the amount of power each windmill generates and the average wind speed from each day.

At this rate, the windmills will have paid for themselves by the year ... 2551. But not to worry, these windmills are winning Reno awards and national recognition.
And while the windmill numbers are lackluster compared to other portions of the project, such as solar panels and retrofitted buildings, Geddes said Reno’s green-energy efforts have earned the city national attention from the likes of the Wall Street Journal, Time and USA Today, as well as the National Resource Defense Council in 2010 naming Reno one of the top 22 “Smarter” cities in the country when it comes to renewable energy.

Spending a million dollars to save $2,785 is smart? Only in government.

And to think some people want these bureaucrats to run our healthcare system and our economy.

Why are you counting the capital cost of the windmills, but not the capital cost of the previous generating plant and associated fuel costs?

Wait a minute... you are Miles and have never provided an independent opinion or thoughtful analysis of anything.

carry on with pity commentary.

The plants are already built, moron. Why don't you tell us how much fuel is needed to generate 25,000 KW of power?

Yea, and they were free to build!

Probably free to maintain as well.

See, this is why most people here think you are dumb.

25 Megawatts is a fairly small nuclear plant. Let's call it about $10 billion.

It's a small to mid-sized coal plant. Probably about $300 million, but you have about 50 years of maintenance and constant feeding of coal. I don't know what those costs would be though. Statistically the O&M costs are probably about 9 cents a kwh.

And 9 cents multiplied by 23,000 is how much?

I noticed that too. Apples to Oranges comparison. One of Miles Ben Zonah's standard debate techniques.

It can't be answered the way you want it answered without knowing the load rate of the plant.

OK....read slowly and carefully....I know this is hard for you...how much would it cost to generate the same amount of electricity stated in the article?

How would I know? I don't know what kind of generating facility you want to build, or the local construction costs. We know the windmills cost a million dollars and generated about 24 megawatts over an approximately 2 year period. And the power was cheaper for the end user than the previous supply was. That's all you can glean from the info in the post.

This is why the Righties want creationism taught in schools, Miles, Vettebigot, Koalatroll and Garbage Can all proving over the last two days that science is some kind of voodoo to them.

I think they have to be screwing with me.

I'm actually confused as to what miles point is. The windmills, according to his post are MORE effective than the manufactuers claimed. Maybe I'm a crazy person but that's NEVER a problem for me when something over performs.

That's because he made swiss cheese out of the original article with his C&P. Some have outperformed, most have not.

Have you looked at Garbage Can's thread about the sun?

I had hair when I started reading these two threads.

Sorry, but he's on iggy and as entertaining as that thread may be, I'm not that much of a glutton for punishment.
