All of these states have recently changed or attempted to change the voter laws.Where you used to be able to bring in a bill with your name and address on it, depending on where you live you now need a valid state issued ID.

You wont be able to use..
Your student ID
A drivers license from a different state
An expired photo ID
Your birth certificate or social security card
Any other proof of name and address

Some states offer a "free" ID, which doesn't actually factor the cost to get all the proper documentation you need in order to vote.. so while cheap its still not free..

So, there's been lots of debate on the boards about ID. Many people have said if you don't want to pay for an ID, you dont deserve to vote.

I have a valid drivers license. However, under these new laws, using my DL, I would not be able to vote. The DL I carry was issued from a different state, my address is different since we move often, even my name has changed since it was issued( I got married).

The DMV charges you double what you normally pay to renew a license that hasnt expired yet. I know plenty of people who have at least 1 error on their license, and under the new laws .. they wouldnt be allowed to vote either.

Even if you are in favor of voter ID laws( which obviously Im not). My question to you is, if you want to stop fraud, but not restrict citizens from voting, why are the ID laws so strict? Why if its just about making sure legal citizens vote, are the laws so rushed? Why not allow a period of time in which those who dont have the proper ID can get them?

Because it's not about keeping people who aren't allowed to vote from going to the polls since the incidence of voter fraud is so small as to be nonexistent. It's about disenfranchising voters that are not voting illegally, but who tend to vote for the Democratic party.

I got no problem with needing a valid ID to vote. Though I'm also a fan of a national ID and it should be free.

I didnt see what was wrong with the old laws .. I could basically use any form of ID, as long as it proved my name and address.

What kind of a scofflaw doesn't have valid ID? If it's not laziness, it's total irresponsibility. It takes minutes to walk into a government office to get one.

I don't know what the laws are for each of those states or how lax they are or aren't. I know in California if I worked it right I could vote for everybody in my family. Sure I'd have to work around shift changes, probably change my cloths and shave but all I need is a name and an address to vote. When your mother's name is Robin and everybody else in the family is male I could vote for whomever I chose just because I felt like it.

Now the reality is I doubt there are a whole lot of people who are taking advantage of it simply because it's a fair bit of work to get someones name an address not knowing if they got there before you all for one little vote. Still without knowing the laws in those states I can't tell you if they were to lax or just right. I think California is far to lax.

And my problem with non government issued ID is the same as my reasoning for a Federal ID. There is no standard for driver license appearance or texture or anything. I can tell if you hand me a fake twenty, I can't tell if you handed me a fake Rhode Island ID or a fake Michigan University ID.

Teenagers(18/19 year olds)? The elderly? .. anyone who doesnt drive?

They do have just plan Identification Cards that aren't driver's licenses

I'm missing a connection between the dots here. Are people who vote for Democrats less likely to have in-state IDs?

If you can get by on just cash maybe but if you use a credit card you're gonna need picture ID. Last I checked you needed one to cash a check and receive money back not just deposit it into your account but to be fair it's been years since I've done THAT. It just doesn't seem like that big a deal to me.

Horrible, isn't it. These poor people only have between now and the first Tuesday after the first Monday in November to get proper ID.
Oh, the humanity!

Well, when I 1st started college I had a student ID .. thats all I ever needed. I should say, I didnt have a credit card. Also many places dont check ID for credit cards unless its a large purchase.

Can't you just show them your receipt for the free birth control as proof of ID?

Regardless it doesn't hurt my feelings one bit that you need to prove your identity in order to vote. Frankly I'm MORE annoyed that you have to vote where they tell you to.

A Texas State Court invalidated several provisions of the Texas Law yesterday.

Thats true .. but theres almost no need for a state issued ID .. I dont know too many people who would go out and buy one, just to have it.

Ummm... Buying tobacco, alcohol, getting a job, traveling, being drug tested, going to college, and one that I can clearly remember from a friend of mine was to become a certified baby sitter (which is a good idea rather than trusting your pride and joy children to some untrained child).

....It's kinda important to have I.D.

It also feeds the the right wing authoritarian punishment fetish.

Why wouldn't an 18 year old have an ID? For that matter why wouldn't the elderly? If anything those two groups would seem to be the most likely to have one.

There's not? What the hell?

Because some people are poor, crippled, broke, no transportation, no access to birth records, etc. and they have been voting just fine for years. Everybody body at the local church knows them by name. Now it will be illegal for them to vote. This is just busybody poutrage.
