What are some other words for "mistress?" As in, a woman in a position of power...a ruler. How would slaves address her? What I really want is something similar to the Latin "domina," but I'm coming up short. Any suggestions?

Our first thought was "domme" maybe "madam."

Slaves called the masters wife, MISTRESS. It usually took the form of MISSUS, master was usually expressed as MASSA or MARSTER. Understand that slave english had regional variance. An Atlanta slave often could not understand a slave from Charleston or Richmond.

I've considered using mistress...but my character feels like so much more than that. It's almost too feminine for her. My story is set 300 years into the future, so it's quite a different world, almost ancient.

Lady, Baroness, Queen, Princess, Duchess, Marquise, Marchioness, Countess, Donna, Signora...although a lot of these are more specific. Nevertheless, prince can generically refer to any ruler, so I don't see why princess can't be the same.

"Leige" is a non-gendered title, or you can cobble something together-- "Faro" or "Estal" "Zeton"

readers will understand it by the context pretty quickly.

(I grabbed these words out of the name generators at seventh sanctum, by th way-- an incredible writer's resource!

I thought Faro is/was a card game

Not sure its a proper term or what you're looking for, but years ago I had a Mistress that preferred being called "My Lady" I've used it in my writing here and there. It works when she is being directly addressed, but most likely not when being referred to.

It's not really an answer to your question but I was reminded of the line:

"So here is Mistress Stella again." - Jonathon Swift

Words are funny that way!

addressing Mistress

As Lovecraft alludes, I have phonically shortened "My Lady" and used "M'Lady", but only when being directly addressed by one of her subjects in dialogue. Must be my British heritage ....

In one of my stories, the sub thinks of her as "My Mistress" speaks about her as "her Grace" and to her as "M'Lady,"-- in between modern slangy speech because they are playing at a ren Faire.
Sometimes she slips up and calls her "Baby." :D

You all are fantastic. Stella, thanks for the excellent website. I'm going to use that in the future.

I love the suggestions, and currently am using "mistress" until I find one that is more appropriate to the character. It's very frustrating. I WANT to use "domina," but Sam Raimi and Rob Tapert already claimed it, at least for now....

I don't want my book directly associated with pop culture references. In addition to calling her "mistress," my character's attendants and slaves use her first name, which seems too inappropriate.
