Actually, I think miles is pissed he has to buy bulbs which he is mandated to buy by the government - also funny.

But as I understand it, and I'm no light bulb authority... the government (in 2007 btw) set efficiency standards that were to take effect 10 years in the future. Those efficiency standards didn't ban regular bulbs, regular bulbs just didn't meet the standard. Good news for the manufacturers because they were losing money on regular bulbs and could make new ones and make some profit.

At the end of the day though, the enforcement of 2007 law was not funded in the last spending bill. Thus, its a non-issue.

As I understand it. Miles probably has more detailed knowledge, but since he never posts anything but snide one-liners about Obama, I doubt he'll share with the class.

The Powers That Be totaled up the poison released when standard light bulbs were thrown away and determined that a new design would use less energy, last longer, and ultimately poison the Earth less because of all of these factors. And it cost more.

I change my light bulbs less. I use less power. What is not to love? If the DOE can spend some cash to jump start the next technological leap, what is not to love in that?

Secondly, they contain electronic components - the manufacture of which requires a range of nasty chemicals, and the release into the atmosphere of dangerous heavy metals and other polution. Last and by no means least, every CFL bulb manufactured today contains not insignificant amounts of the toxic metal mercury.
