Obama accepts $1M donation from Bill Maher while condemning Rush Limbaugh

Bill is a Democrat and a tool for pushing forward the Democratic agenda. Nobody on the Democratic is going to deny his money and piss him off.

Rush is a Republican...a tool for promoting the Republican Conservative agenda and Democats are going to condemn him any chance they get.

The Republican leadership would do the same thing...support their political tools.

It's just basic politics as usual. Neither party leadership cares that much about what either Rush or Bill says. In another week or two, most everyone will get tired of this and move on to the next "scandal"

So then where does it stop? All manner of unsavory people, corporations, and other more nebulous entities contribute to PACs. If Obama has to publicly come out against a donor then both sides have to sift through all their donors and assemble laundry lists of disowning.

In the debate world that would be called a slippery slope argument and is generally considered a no-no.

As for the point itself, I am responding to you saying they wanted Obama to do something illegal which is untrue. At least for most of them. They just want him to say he doesn't agree. They know he can't physically give the money back.

According to a lot of people here Bill is not a Democrat at all. That's why he gave a million bucks to Obama.

If Obama wants to have credibility on the Limbaugh attacks, says Siobhan “Sam” Bennett, president of the Women’s Campaign Fund and a former Democratic House candidate, he’s going to have to show he’ll step up to all sexism when he sees it, even the sexism that comes from huge donors.

“They’re absolutely identical,” Bennett said. “It’s completely unacceptable when Maher said sexist things about Bachmann and Palin. It’s completely unacceptable when Rush called Sandra Fluke a ‘slut.’”

I disagree.

Bill Maher is a gadfly, who has little to no input on Democratic policy.

Rush Limbaugh is the 800-pound Gorilla of Republican policy, he is intimately involved on a near-daily basis with the shaping of Republican policy and the manufacture of selective outrage.

In my mind, anyway, there is no similarity whatsover between the two.

Huh, I thought they were both self-important, unamusing bags of hot air.

Been there. Done that. It still doesn't change the fact that broadcasts licenses are distributed to communications corporations at way below market value.

Not so.

Since 1993: "The FCC uses auctions (competitive bidding) as one of the primary means of choosing among two or more mutually exclusive applications for an initial license for most commercial services, including wireless, television and radio."

It's a tax payer give away to corporations. Just because the FCC is filled with lobbyists who hop between industry and government positions doesn't change that fact.

Fact based on what? The FCC doesn't "give away" licenses anymore.

I can actually remember when Maher was funny. He had a stand up special on HBO that was pretty decent. Not great but still funny. Then somewhere along the way somebody told him he knew everything and it was straight downhill from there.

According to Bill Maher, hes not a democrat. However, he may just be saying that so his comedy doesnt effect the party, or maybe the party as a whole just isnt liberal enough for him.

That doesn't actually answer my question. I want to know when and what specifically Maher said. Was it on his Friday Night show or was it part of his stand up routine or one of his movies. There is actually a difference.

Doesn't matter. What Maher said is completely different than what Rush said. There is a world of difference between describing your opinion of a person by calling them a cunt, dickhead, asshole, etc. and claiming someone is literally a prostitute, date rapist, or murderer.

Sarah Palin was just on Fox News saying Obama should give the money back. That bogus attack is all over the conservative blogosphere right now.

I didn't make a slippery slope fallacy. Go here and educate yourself about what you're talking about and re-post IMO: http://www.fallacyfiles.org/slipslop.html

He says that because everyone says they're not a member of a party because they want to sound smarter than everyone else and when things go to Hell they can say they weren't part of it. People on here do it all the time. 99% of the time it's total bullshit.

She's not the only person saying things. I don't know what she said. She's also an idiot.

And yes you did.

Id say Bill Maher is about as liberal as it gets and I would be honestly surprised to hear that he had ever voted republican, in any election, ever. However, he does tell people hes registered as an independent.

Of course he hasn't. He's old enough to have possibly voted independent during some tough Democrat times but there's no way he ever voted Republican on anything. He has claimed Libertarian and I might maybe see that because Libertarians are morons and Maher is indeed a moron.

FCC licenses are way below market value. Competitive bid doesn't mean shit. It's the same with leasing land to oil companies. It's a give away of resources to corporations. I know if I owned a gold mine or an oil well I sure as hell wouldn't lease it to somebody. I would get a fixed percentage of gross profit of what anybody extracts from that land. You're living in LaLa Land if you think the huge amounts of cash and lobbyists going back and forth between corporations and government agencies hasn't corrupted the system.

Hes really, really not liberal?

.. is this a joke?

what KR said. he's a staunch, apologetically bourgeois capitalist who veers dangerously close to libertarian ideology re: his attitudes towards the poor and who has always had a really shitty attitude towards women and people of color.

unfunny rants about how bush was literally hitler does not a liberal make. he's just very loud and therefore very much in the public eye as a representative of the "true liberal"
