The real reason to vote for "Anyone But Obama..."

Blerk! Dorp! Waggawaggawagga! Soccommunistilocialism! Kenya! Long form! Bleeeeeeee! Woodlydoodlyxoodly! Gah! Noinknoinkanoik! Alinsky! Dopeydoopeydippyfoo! Wright! GM! Solyndra! Yipyipyip! Bleep! Gronk!

That's what I've learned from the RWCJ crowd here.

Pardon me for my ignorance. What is the RWCJ crowd?

If the cake is a lie you'd best start baking mr the Republicans are crazy but I'm not voting Obama.

Actually I guess that's a question. I have no clue where you live, are you in that group like me where you can safely either vote a third party or flat out stay home?

I live in Vermont, so my vote is largely irrelevant, much like it was in 08 when I lived in Oregon. So "safely" I'm not sure, but I won't vote for Obama and I can't see voting for any of the lunatics the Republicans seem to be thinking of throwing away. I'll very likely once again vote Libertarian, or possibly write in Gary Johnson. Otherwise I tend to vote the individual, rather than party or specific issues.

Who do you think will get the GOP nod? Who do you think will win politicalgon '12/

I usually do the same thing...I am so afraid of having any of the current GOP guys in there though, that I will be voting for Obama again.

That's what I thought. So Perg would you vote for Obama if you lived in a battleground state? I'm asking mostly because while part of me is simply curious. The other is that I see you constantly reminding people that you didn't vote Obama as some sort of badge of honor. I don't think a lot of people believe you but that's beside the point. I assume until it becomes undeniable that people are telling the truth. ::Shrug:: That said I didn't vote Obama and depending on what initiatives are on the ballot I might never vote Obama.

It's not because I wouldn't though. It's because I don't have to.

At a wild guess I'd say Romney gets the nod and Obama wins re-election.

I don't know. I'd have to rejigger my thinking. I really don't like voting against rather than voting for.

I constantly remind people of that because they constantly call me a lib, a Dem, or refer to Obama as "my candidate" or "my president." I don't like getting broad-brushed like that. I voted for Barr in 08, partly because it didn't matter what I did, as Obama was going to sweep Oregon anyway, and partly in an admittedly vain hope that a lot of other people would vote 3rd party and someone would notice. Where do you live?

Your vote is indeed relevant, no matter what state you live in. Most of the GBers here who cry 'foul' are highly unlikely to cast a vote. Yet, they are the first to whine about anything not going their way.

I'm a Californian. Sure my state carries a lot of weight but my individual vote for the president is utterly meaningless. While I prefer voting for I'm a pragmatist. As much as I occasionally pretend I'd like to be the honorable one I make no claims that I'm a particularly moral person.

Since apparently you've decided to humor me what kind of person would you vote for president?

I think people think I'm a lefty, too. And I did vote for Obama in 2008. But he was my first and only major party candidate for president. Prior to him, I voted exclusively third party.

I had my own reasons for voting for him, not least of which was that he functioned as a de facto third-party candidate in that election. But there were other reasons as well.

Now that he's the incumbent, I won't be voting for him again, nor for the R candidate. It is not a referendum on his performance; it is entirely independent of any of the factors of his presidency. It is simply because I resent the current two-party political system and will continue to vote third party until one breaks through.

This would be true even if I lived in a state where the third-party vote made or broke the election. In fact, especially there.

Knowing me, when it does, I'll complain and start to vote fourth-party.

Uhm, are you not paying attention to his response to you? http://forum.literotica.com/showpost.php?p=40219375&postcount=30

^^^^ It happens. I guess I could google this Gary Johnson fellow. I was more looking for a general group of traits or policies.

No third party will ever break through. You're wasting your time and your vote. Worse your hurting yourself, not your cause per se, but your cause is lost, but whatever you want done by the government one way or the other you're hurting.

If you want a third party we HAVE to change how voting works in the US. I'm with you on changing how we vote to a run off or I'm open to ideas on how to create a system where you accomplish more than fucking over the side you agree with most by voting anything but them.

I'm completely sympathetic and wish your dream would come to America. The fact is however that we have a two party system because in a winner takes all system you have no choice but to ally yourself with the people you hate the least. The only logical way to get a third party (at least at the federal level) would be if we changed how the presidency is decided. Can you really imagine the hell that this country would go through with a president who only managed 34% of the population? A world where the Tea Party won the presidency not because they were actually popular but because the Republicans, Democrats and Occupy Wall Street sufficiently split the vote?

Again I'm not against you, if you think you have some answers to shed here by all means. Tell me I'm wrong. This is one of those rare times when I desperately want to be wrong. I just don't think I am.

you're wrong in a way that it doesnt matter who you vote for. right. left. no matter. my personal position in life will not change no matter who is in office.

That's because of a little known fact. Government doesn't do a lot to the common man on the average day. The government would have to get awful invasive for it to effect my life. I'm not poor enough to collect government aid, I'm not rich enough for increased taxes to include me. I don't break enough laws to be concerned who the government is and isn't putting in jail and shy of banning porn I don't say anything so crazy that limiting free speech would limit me. (Not saying I supposed limiting free speech I'm just pointing out that I don't call for mutiny often enough to be effected. So on and so forth.

With respect, voting my conscience is the opposite of "wasting my vote." Voting for a party I disagree with just because they have a better chance of winning is wasting my vote.

I don't know what you're talking about in terms of "changing how voting works." The electoral college? Contributions? Polling places?

I don't vote because of political ads or party affiliation. I allow the most viable third party to bring a stronger story to the table the next time around. I believe that the simple game-theory of a two-player contest has weakened our country, and won't support it with my vote. But I will still vote, and I will use my vote to voice my preference.

If you are voting party-line because you think you just should, you are wasting your vote. I am using mine.

I have never voted because it doesn't matter.

I guess that depends on where you "locate" elections. I locate them within me--the voter.

If you see an old beer can on the beach, it's true that it 'doesn't matter' if you pick it up, since there are lots of beer cans on lots of beaches. But it matters to me, the guy on the beach, not to have trash there. So I pick it up.

my favorite beaches are pretty pristine. there are no old beer cans to pick up.
