So I've been seeing this woman for a short time. She is more outgoing than me when it comes to sex. I am amazed at how weak Muslim women are. They need to stand up for themselves. They are equal to Muslim men. Well, that brings me to my irk of the day when it comes to Islam: 91% of acid attacks are perpetrated against Muslim women over some perceived slight, often for not veiling their faces properly. And it really pisses me off that there are Muslim (and even non-Muslim) women here in the west who cluelessly don the hijab and niqab to show respect for poor, picked-on Islam, completely oblivious to how many women in Islamic countries are fighting not be veiled.

It's gotten particularly bad in Pakistan. That country got its first Oscar this year for a short documentary featuring two such women and the medical team trying to help them.

This is the second case of "honor" violence I've seen in the last 30 days... from Phoenix, AZ. There have been dozens more elsewhere, most fatal, but this girl got lucky. When her father started to cut her throat for the crime of leaving class with a boy, her sister intervened. Instead of killing her, father, mother and sister proceeded to tie her up, beat her and burn her with a hot spoon.

One of the more infamous cases of honor violence in the U.S. was perpetrated by a very successful, well-educated businessman by the name of Muzzammil Hassan. He and his wife launched Bridges TV, a Muslim network designed to, as the name suggests, promote understanding of Muslim culture and build bridges to others. And then he just had to go and spoil everything by beheading his wife in the TV studio. Bill Maher had a field day with that one.

Mmmkay. I'm officially changing my irk of the day about the Islamic world from acid attacks to people who make sweeping, all-inclusive accusations against all Muslims.

Is it true that hard-core Islamists preach that Muslim men should marry non-Muslim women in the interest of dawa? Yes.

Is it true that some non-Muslim women find themselves married to a violent, oppressive man who showed no signs of being a fundamentalist asshole prior to marriage? Yes.

Is it true that there's a double standard at work in that Muslim women are often forbidden to marry non-Muslim men (since her husband, considered dominant, is unlikely to convert or allow their children to be raised as Muslims)? Yes.

Is it true that all such marriages are about dawa? No.

Is it true that many such marriages are simply about two people in love and religion has nothing to do with their goals? Yes.

Is it true that there are plenty of progressive Muslims families who give their blessings to their children marrying outside of the faith? Yes.

So, my new irk of the day... sweeping generalizations. You don't have to exaggerate about Islamism to make the case that it's bad.

And while I'm venting and being long-winded, I'd like to officially bitch and moan about the position I often find myself in when it comes to this subject. As a person of conscience, it's incredibly difficult for me to tolerate the hardliners on either side of the debate. They politicize it relentlessly. Instead of analyzing and criticizing the subject matter, they attack each other. Or create an anti-Christian thread to prove to themselves and others that they're not a racist.

If I went around frothing about how all Muslim imams are pedophiles, I'd deserve the label "Islamaphobe." But say that about the Catholic priesthood and there's nothing bigoted about it, apparently. So goddamn hypocritical.

And then there's the other side who rallies to cries of deporting all Muslims, uttering racial epithets while they're at it.

In the meantime, this piddling bullshit in the world's everyday dialogue (and this place is a microcosm of it) ensures that the real oppressors, the Islamists responsible for nearly 80% of contemporary violent conflicts worldwide, whose fanatical devotion to their ideology creates societies that rival the religious barbarism of the Middle Ages, go unacknowledged and undealt with in realistic terms.

And statements like yours, PSW, practically guarantee things will remain status quo.

So I can choose to think that 10% of Muslim men in Afghanistan are nice enough not to beat their women, or I can choose to think that ~90% or Muslim men in Afghanistan are woman beaters. I am assuming that there is one beaten woman for each man.
