March 1 is Dekopon Day http://www.runemasterstudios.com/graemlins/images/orange.gif

What is a Dekopon? It is a Japanese Tangerine of amazing sweetness and deliciousness. It looks like this:

Here in the U.S. we call them "Sumos" (here is an article on Sumos) They are now in season and can be bought at Whole Foods Markets and other up-scale type stores--at least in California. I don't know if they're starting to ship Sumos elsewhere.

Won't you join me in celebrating this most wonderful fruit? If you can't find a Dekopon, a regular tangerine will do

I have navel oranges that are pink inside like grapefruit-- will that do?

(I have never seen pink-fleshed oranges before!)

I see something like that in Safeway and other stores all the time. They're called "cuties," although that might be a brand name. They are very tasty, easy to peel and almost seedless.

Nope, not the same ;) Cuties are Mandarins and Clementines. Sumos are completely seedless, larger, sweeter and juicer. Check out a Whole Foods or Gelsons.

They will probably have them at Trader Joe's. :)
