I'm not really sure....as I am not familiar with all state laws. Some places the victim has a choice in the mater with regard to filing charges against the attacker. Other states that is not the case as the state files charges regardless. What is that states definition of assault vs. harassment? In my state you can shoot someone for spitting on you or stealing your hub caps. In other states you go to jail for shooting the guy who is raping your wife.
If this story is just BS used to get a rise out of the right wing nutters then LOL...if it is true however that some government official/office has shown favoritism or let a criminal go because of their religious beliefs/laws (and not those set forth by the legislating bodies with the authority over that district) then wtf ...something should be done.
If my neighbor across the street decides to rent to a brown guy, and the night he moves in I burn a cross in his yard...
