Occupy Denver To Hold “Fuck The Police” Rally

Although it is not a general assembly-sanctioned event, select members of Occupy Denver, the Internet collective Anonymous and “an array of other activists” are spreading word online of their first combined “Fuck the Police” march. Scheduled for this Saturday, the event has the potential to become a regular feature in the local movement, pending a successful turnout rate this weekend.

But its word choice — and the occasionally rocky relationship between Denver’s police and protesters — make it a tough issue for the larger body to sign off on.

In other occupations, similar anti-police events have become more commonplace. Occupy Oakland, for example, stages regular “Fuck the Police” marches.

This Saturday, the first Denver version will began at 7 p.m. at the D&F Tower at 16th and Arapahoe as part of a national push spread by Anonymous to build similar simultaneous events in several cities.

Denver has paid out $900,000 a year (2008-2011) to settle "excessive force" claims against the Denver Police.

The cops around here have a tendency to let the MagLite do the talking. They have more than earned a few "fuck the police" rallies.

The Denver cops have ties to the klan that go back generations. They are a bunch of thugs. Do I want anarchy in my street? Fuck no. Do I understand the frustration the public feels when paying top dollar for a police force that has no respect for the people it serves? Fuck yes.

The latest protest happened downtown on the 16th Street Mall. Denver took a street downtown and closed it to vehicles except for shuttle buses. I am on the shuttle on a summer night heading to the bus terminal, minding my own business and looking out the open window. The bus stops at a red light and I notice four Denver cops forcing a homeless guy to empty all of his belongings out of a trash bag onto the street. One of the cops is using his boot to sift through the guy's stuff.

A very large, very short female cop looks up and sees me looking out of the bus.

"What the hell are you looking at?"

"Not a fucking thing." My reply was as short as she was.

She did not break eye contact with me until the bus got a green light and headed down the street.
