I can't spell "ballot" in spite of three attempts. Anywaaaay...
But what we see right now is the primary process, which involves not nearly as broad and diverse a crowd. These are the party people, not the general voters. Highly engaged issue voters and for the most part party members beyond merely general vote casters. These are the people the parties also solicit campaign contributuins and recruit volunteers from for canvassing and gotv efforts come November.
It's the base. And the Republican base has become increasingly hardcore over the last couple of years.
This is one of the reasons why McCain couldn't win against Obama. In order to secure the nomination, he had to pander so much to the hard right base that he lost his moderate cred, and the independents and centrist democrats that he might have been able to pick up shunned him.
The other, of course, being his batshit crazy running mate.
I think you're right if you mean "people who would probably vote for a Republican" when you say Republican. There are many a sane person who go for the R at the ballot box. There is a difference between who the voters are and who is running. McCain won because he was moderate and was elected by Republican "moderates". You are correct that most of the Republican candidates are Right Wing wackos but it is the voters who are the true Republican party, not the candidates and McCain won because most Republican voters are right of center but not Right Wing Nuts. Ditto Romney. I refer to "Republicans" as the voters, not the candidates.
