Republican lawmakers are pushing for legislation that would require pregnant women to have an ultrasound before terminating their pregnancy. In response, Howell introduced an amendment that would require men to have a rectal exam and a cardiac stress test before obtaining erectile dysfunction medication like Viagra.

:):D:rolleyes:

Playing spiteful political games with medical procedures is the most asinine thing imaginable. Is it any wonder the U.S. is a fallen empire.

What's wrong with requiring a cardiac stress test? Sex, when it's good, is very strenuous, and can lead to heart attacks.

Do you believe it's alright to require an ultrasound before getting an abortion?

Susan Konen Foundation believes there shouldn't be abortions, because a Congressional committee told them so. The committee of course is overwhelmingly male, none of whom will either get breast cancer nor need an abortion. McCarthyite fascism lives.

I hope these boys get breast cancer and find themselves discriminated against.

I withdraw one-half of my comment. This form of discrimination is as invidious as the others. How about it, Susan B. Komen Foundation? Ready to stand up?

Effective immediately the management of LITEROTICA requires all posts to include an Indian accent.

American Indian or East Indian? Oh, excuse me. How! A thousand pardons gracious sahhibs and memsabs!

Okay. WHY do politicians need to mess with MY body? Or anyone's for that matter? They don't have the babies, they should butt out.

But on the other hand, men need the invasive-ness JUST so they know what a woman has to endure. Maybe this will make them more empathic to our suffering?

Am i the only one who thought this thread was about tits and vaginas?

Pols mess with everybody. Lib or Con, in this regard, they are all alike. This is one of the reasons why most people hate them.

The Virginia bill--including another one saying adoption agencies can deny application purely on same-sex prospective parents--has effectively cleared both Virginia houses. They are going to happen.

Are they going to secede again? Not from the Union, from civilization.

Unfoturnately, if you count noses, they might be the voice of "civilization," as crazy as that is.

I think you're right. I believe there is a small majority of adults in the US who would vote against abortion on demand and a small majority who would vote against same sex marriage. :( The majority is declining, and will eventually be a minority, probably, but they are over 50% now.

ETA: The ultrasound bill would probably be found to be unconstitutional because it serves no purpose but to delay the abortions and make them more expensive.

I kind of like the bill the opponents were trying to tack on that would require men to have a treadmill test in a doctor's office before they could be prescribed Viagra. :D

I don't think I would like being the subject of such a test, but it does make sense for a man's heart to be tested under those circumstances. It definitely makes more sense than the ultrasound law. Presumably, Viagra would be prescribed mostly to older men, and some of them might have histories of heart problems. Giving them the ability to perform strenuous acts could lead to deadly heart attacks. There have been cases of men having heart attacks during sex.

The ultrasound law is strictly for the purpose of trying to persuade a woman to not have an abortion, but I believe it interferes with her rights.

Herself told me that Gov. McDonnell has capitulated, in part. Here's what the LA Times says:

"Backing away from his support for a proposed law that would require women to submit to an invasive ultrasound before undergoing an abortion, Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell on Wednesday asked the state Legislature to amend the bill to exclude the controversial requirement.

"'Mandating an invasive procedure in order to give informed consent is not a proper role for the state,' McDonnell said in a statement. 'No person should be directed to undergo an invasive procedure by the state, without their consent, as a precondition to another medical procedure.'"

Of course, no word on the adoption issue, but perhaps sanity will return to Virginia, and Virginia will return to civilization.
