President Obama’s re-election campaign ... has an official soundtrack, it was announced today, to be featured at campaign events across the country in the months ahead. An Obama aide said the tunes would energize the crowd before a presidential appearance and keep everyone excited while Obama works ropelines and mingles with fans after delivering remarks.

The only thing REO Speedwagon would ever energize me into doing is running for the exits.

Just stick with the Al Green and you can't go wrong.

I'll hijack my own thread for the following: I was going to respond about how I was unclear exactly how REO Speedwagon even managed to become famous, when I realized there is brand-new technology that could help me find the answer. In the course of using this technology, I discovered that REO Speedwagon was formed in 1967.

1967!

Before the White Album came out. Four or five years before "Let's Stay Together" came out.

I had no idea.

Dude. They did that song.

Imagine that. A band formed in '67 makes the top 15 list of the re-election soundtrack for a President born (allegedly) in '61. Who would have thunk it?

That playlist is positively sanitized.
I don't know why I'm surprised by that.
It would have been way more funny (and awesome) if he had Henry Rollins curate his music playlist.

The irony is that "Roll With the Changes" is one of the few songs on that list that will resonate with people in Obama's age group. I think it came out my junior year of high school, and he's a year older than me. He'll kill with that song if he plays it at his rallies in the Midwest.

Two songs on the list from the only black superstar in country music looks more than a little pander-y, but that's politics for ya.

It's old white people at their worst. Remember when he used to say he listened to Nas and Lil Wayne and Jay-Z and Stevie Wonder and Bob Dylan, etc?

Not so much on this list.

Frankly, I thought REO peaked with Ridin' The Storm Out. Then they discovered that sappy songs sell, and it was all downhill after that.

Not so much.
You know what would have been much better? Inviting musicians to guest curate for each stop - they pick the music. I was only half joking with the Henry Rollins comment.

No Prince. No Erykah. No Van Hunt, Marsha Ambrosius or Genya Ravan. No Juan Atkins, Derrick May or Carl Craig.

No Feist, no Cat Power, Au Revoir Simone or LCD Soundsystem!

Eh...it's all good. Even Obama's coolness has its limits. :D

Risk aversion. There's not going to be any repeat of the Common controversy as long as he's still running. There's no hip-hop even though anyone younger than middle aged has grown up with it, and no one really well known for lefty politics (except Springsteen, who is iconic enough to be beyond criticism).

For edge, you've got the gay Ricky Martin, aka the one Latino singer your grandmother has heard of; and ELO, who had backwards lyrics on one of their albums that people were at first worried were Satanic but in actuality were as pointless as their frontwards lyrics.

Someone in his camp really, really thought this one through. They are playing to the masses.

Dissapointed by the lack of Baby Got Back.

Also, I don't know half of those artists and tunes.

What's pointless about "Don't bring me down...BRUCE"?

Genya Ravan....I haven't seen that name in a long time. I saw her long, long ago and far away with 10 Wheel Drivre.
