call for expanded 'new' story listing

there doesn't seem to be a site improvement thread, so I'm posting this here to see what other authors think.

When you click into a category, the 'new story' listing is very abbreviated. If a category is active, like during a contest, you may see an interesting story title, but by the time you come back to read it, it's gone from the page.

I would like to see a continuous listing in reverse chronological order, so readers can access the most recent stories, beyond the relatively short span currently configured. Either that, or configure the See All Stories in this Category link to list in reverse chronological order, rather than jumping to a random letter.

I think all authors want to get feedback on their work, and this would expose readers to a larger selection of recent stories, which may encourage your currently active writers to make more submissions.

Seems like an easy fix. What do you guys think?

Adding a link for reverse chronological order shouldn't be all that difficult to implement.

Even adding a "show more" at the bottom of the latest stories to provide a list from the last seven days would work.

Sounds like a good idea to me.

The only question is whether the powers that be might see this, and whether there's any desire to act upon it.

Strangely (or not, as great minds think alike!) I was thinking this exact thing today myself. You can go back through the top lists, but if a story doesn't quite make the grade there's no chance for us to actually see it and give it a chance!

I'm for the 'show more' option for sure...

Not that this wouldn't be a nice-to-have "another slice" at it, but all of the stories in a category are available alphabetically from the story genre pages (and via a couple of other cuts too--most recent, most popular, even a random list)--and the authors have listing of their own stories available from their author pages. Why would a chronological back-dated hodge-podge of listings be any more accessible to a browsing reader than entering through the genre or author lists? How much leading by the nose do we need?

Currently, there is a "New List" and stories are there, in chronological order for about a week. That's besides the listings for theme contest entries. They are also in alphabetical order in the genre listings, and the new stories are marked with a yellow N as long as they are on the New List. Are you saying, in addition to that, there should also be a second listing, in chronological order, of the 100,000 or so stories and poems available here?

That just seems a bit excessive.

This thread deals directly with the latest stories in a category, Box. So, pretty much every character of your post is irrelevant to the subject of the thread.

*sigh*

Anyway...

As to spoonfeeding, I don't think you can spoonfeed readers enough. The code necessary for the suggestion should be minimal, as should the footprint, and it has the possibility of catching single genre readers who might have otherwise missed your story trying to see it in the New List, which isn't organized with category readers in mind - at all.

I'm sorry, I just cant stand this for one minute longer.

Darkniclad, what the hell is your avatar? Every time I look at it, I can't make sense of it. I feel like it would make sense, but some part of my brain just doesn't work, and wont make the connection.

So please, what is it?

I gave it an interpretation try a couple of days ago, but I concluded it must be from some sort of transformer movie I've missed (on purpose).

And I see now that I misinterpreted what list the OP was talking about too. Yes, the new list there could be longer.

Mystery Science Theater 3000

"Hai Keeba" became one of Tom's catchphrases after an episode. The avatar originated on another site where everyone made "busting through the wall" avatars one time, and this was my choice of subject.

But I don't want to waste my previous time looking though them alphabetically, neither do I want to scroll through hundreds of pages of authors I have no clue about.

All I want to see is more than just the last day and a half of 'New' listings in a category in case I missed something!

And no, the general 'New' list doesn't always help because one has to wade through every other category's stories to find the stories one is interested in.

I don't believe the request was for all 100,000 stories or poems to be available - just a little more of the New by category!

Sorry to join in and suggest a little change...don't mean to rock the boat or anything...

Are either of you the ones who would need to make the change? If not, what harm would it do?

To try to disarm things before they get any worse, SR did realize he misinterpreted the question here:

1. I pretty much think that people should spend more time taking care of themselves and less time wanting to be spoonfed.

2. I have already posted that I misinterpreted your OP and agreed with you that it would be helpful for the list you were talking about to be longer.

3. You are blowing smoke to be talking on the forum about anyone who actually needs to make a change. Those that would be needed to make the change don't read the forum and, from a historical perspective, are pretty much impervious to suggestions when you do track them down (as Dark indicated above). If you really want to talk about reaching someone who actually could make a change, you'd need to use the PM function, not the forum.

(Other than that, Mrs. Lincoln, how was the play?)

I agree with the spoonfeeding, and not necessarily from a reader's standpoint (I'm no socialist), but for the writers.

With so many stories being added to the site these days you can be on and off the New list on a category page on the same day! And if you don't have time to get votes, or get 1-bombed on the first day, you don't make it into the 'Recently Popular' lists either, compounding the problem.

I've PMed Laurel, not sure if that will make any difference, but who knows. :)

thanks for all the feedback, especially those that agreed with me!

the longer chronological listing will provide more exposure to your current active writers. there's no reason why the bottom of the new page within each category can't have a Next link that shows the next most recent 25 or so stories, and let readers step thru as far back as the want to go, 25 stories at a time.

the alpha listings work this way, but I don't like commenting or rating a story from 5 years ago cuz you never know if the author is still around.

however, you know a comment on a story from two weeks ago will get to the author, and hopefully encourage him/her to write more, or perhaps write better!

I spend about 10 hours writing, proofing, rewriting before submitting a story to this site. I'd appreciate it if it were more readily available to the masses than the current brief stint on the new page, before being lumped in with the thousands of other stories submitted to this site since it first launched.

it kind of reminds me of the final warehouse scene in Raiders of the Lost Ark.

It's a whole lot better than the marketplace sites. Your book is displayed for about 34 minutes at Allromanceebooks.com before it's thrown into the pile (and not really displayed at all at Amazon.com and B&N)--and these are works you polished up for the market.

Don't get me wrong, I LOVE Literotica and think it's the best online erotica site on the internet. It's the only place I post my stories and the only place I go to read erotica. I just think that no matter how great a site it, there is always room for improvement.

I was hoping that the site admins might monitor these threads and see this suggestion, and the support it has from other authors.

It would be nice if there was a Suggestion Box thread here specifically for this purpose.

They don't. They don't have the time or inclination to do so. They say so in the forum rules. This part of the board isn't moderated (or monitored) by anyone at all administratively connected to the web designers/owners.

We've had years and years (and years) of repeated requests for this and that--and invariably when the site is enhanced (and it has been enhanced significantly in the last year), the upgrades (although very nice to have) are not responsive to the requests mulled again and again (and again) on this forum.
