Berlin is so new looking city.

Just as it would been have been rebuilt yesterday.

I wonder why they dismanteled the Berlin wall.

It would be an interesting tourist attraction today.

This thread isn't about the Lou Reed album.

I am disappointed.

Hmmm, perhaps it was because the USSR disintegrated???

About a third of Berlin WAS rebuilt in the last 15 years.

Another third looks like DDR in the 60's, and the remaining third is an old style European city centre.

Yes, but I think the historical value of the wall.
There's like 50 meters left of it, right to the west of Checkpoint Charlie.

As for the rest, good riddance, it was a fugly thing.

Berlin houses look like barracks.

Not all of them but for the most part.

How much of that European city centre did the war actually leave standing? Serious question, I saw Downfall and it looked like at least four buildings in five were gone or bombed-out shells, dunno if they got that right.

I spent well over two years in West Berlin in the 1970s. Your assessment of the city is off the mark. This is not surprising.

It was torn down because... well if you were a Berliner you would have torn it down yourself...

Maybe, but the German mentality need rules, restrictions and a system to which they can lean on.

This is a matter of taste.

You like their architecture, for me it is somehow too gloomy.

Which -- the prewar architecture (or postwar copies of it), or the Commie architecture, or the generic-modernist architecture?

It wasn't so much torn down as redistributed. I have a couple of pieces on my window ledge.

I mean all of them.

The Soviet Union came to my mind as I walking along the streets of Berlin.

Impersonal.

Is the Berlin art/music/film scene still all, like, dark and punky and avant-garde and Sprockets all the time?
