is it worth a visit?

and what about The Woman in Black (Daniel Radcliffe's latest)?

Woman in Black sounds interesting. Front Row on R4 had a review tonight.

i'm thinking about seeing something tomorrow afternoon and wouldn't mind either, though i don't really know what the grey's about - but it looks intriguing.

Saw The Grey. As always Liam was brilliant. Not much of a plot as it a simple survival film. They do try to add in some existential meaning of life crap, but there is enough action to get past that nonsense. Not a happy ending movie, unless you plan on getting laid directly after watching it. The ending credits or long as hell but they throw one final 2 second clip after, so stay.....

It would probably bother someone who is actually from Alaska, as in real life the characters would have died of hypothermia long before the end.....

thankyou. maybe not for this afternoon, then, with my friend, more a go-alone piece.

The Grey is the kind of movie that leaves you with that awful sick feeling in your stomach as you walk out of the theater saying "WTF?"...

hmmmmn... went to see woman in black.

i feel as if i've read the book.

fantastic photography, lighting, moodiness - dark, bleak, grey and heavy, great spaces with no dialogue but lighting, lighting, lighting building suspense and drama.

couple of places which seemed designed to make you jump failed (for me anyway) but others definitely did the trick and made me laugh at my own reaction. much dark psychological stuff going on in it, and no way would i want a twelve year old to watch it.

radcliffe looked fabulously haunted throughout, and is turning into a good looking man!
definitely of the Hammer house, but the moody, artistic scenery steals the show, imo.

The Grey....meh.

Liam Neeson is good as always. Ending of the movie was anti climatic but now that I know there is a final scene after the credits I will be renting the damn DVD. I knew I should have stayed just a little bit longer. Doubt that would have redeemed the previous two hours. It was an average movie in my humble opinion.

I really enjoyed that one. Excellent creepiness, and well-done scares.

sounds to be similar in nature to The Road which I found deeply disappointing.

I want to see it, but I'm sort of guessing the plot from what I've read about the film and the previews......I'll wait for cable

Saw The Woman in Black last weekend, and thought it was excellent. Definitely one of those "slow-burning" suspenseful movies that doesn't really completely on jump scares. Loved the creepy atmosphere, and loved seeing the Hammer name in the titles. Some really good performances by the cast, as well.

Haven't seen The Grey, but it's on my list.

Thanks for that chipbutty - have been wondering whether to go and see it - now I think I will... Heard Daniel Ratcliff on Simon Mayo/Mark Kermode on Friday - he said he was worried about the certificate as he thought a lot of kids might want to see it due to Harry Potter being in it, but it definitely wasn't for kids!

Trouble is, b/f wants to see The Grey - looks like we might be spending our date in separate screens!!

a sensitive teenager might find it quite disturbing - others would likely find it boring due to lack of immediacy and active dialogue... this is one that relies on the lighting and scenery to build the shivers and allows your own imagination to fill in the gaps. this is one i'd loved to have seen around 14 to 15. spooky in a classy way :)

make it an all-day date and then you can go from one film to the next, maybe with some food inbetween :D

let us know what your impressions are when you've seen either one.

yeah, it would seem it's gaining popularity amongst adult audiences. to be honest, i didn't know what to expect, but got something totally different to anything i imagined i'd be watching. in a good way.

uh huh.

The action in the film takes place in and around a small, remote village and nearby Eel Marsh House, the place haunted by the Woman in Black. The whole feel of the area is very claustrophobic. In reality, it was shot across 15 different locations. "We shot a lot at Pinewood Studios," says Wilkinson. "There was one special set there and others at smaller studios in London. There were other locations in Essex and Yorkshire. The house itself was in Peterborough, an actual house we dressed up."

The shoot for the entire film was nine weeks and they only had a week to get the haunted house ready. In real life it is Cotterstock Hall, a perfectly unscary, lived-in residence which had been previously used in a children's TV drama. "We put ivy on the exterior and we aged and cobwebbed the doors. We just put layers and layers on. We had a greenery department to dress 100 feet of garden with benches all overgrown," adds Wilkinson.

Location manager Chris Moore had a very specific brief for the haunted house itself. "It was all about isolation. The director and the production designer wanted the house to be taller rather than wider. It's got a foreboding about it. There's this idea that it's standing over Arthur Kipps as he approaches it. We went with that house because of the colour of the stone as well. It has something about it you can't quite put your finger on. It just feels eerie and isolated."

I haven't seen a movie in the theater since 2000.

maybe it's time for a change :D

i hardly ever went, maybe once or twice a year to take the kids to watch something they fancied... then there was the LOTR, and Harry Potter... but still with the kids. NOW i go alone or with one adult friend - afternoon, almost empty cinema, no distractions, popcorn and a maccyd's milkshake, and watch whatever the hell I want to. it's grrrreat! still don't fancy a packed house though. the emptiness is - relaxing!
