Susan G. Komen Halts Grants to Planned Parenthood

That's a shame.

The nation's leading breast-cancer charity, Susan G. Komen for the Cure, is halting its partnerships with Planned Parenthood affiliates — creating a bitter rift, linked to the abortion debate, between two iconic organizations that have assisted millions of women.

The change will mean a cutoff of hundreds of thousands of dollars in grants, mainly for breast exams.

Planned Parenthood says the move results from Komen bowing to pressure from anti-abortion activists. Komen says the key reason is that Planned Parenthood is under investigation in Congress — a probe launched by a conservative Republican who was urged to act by anti-abortion groups.

The rupture, which has not been publicly announced as it unfolded, is wrenching for some of those who've learned about it and admire both organizations.

"We're kind of reeling," said Patrick Hurd, who is CEO of Planned Parenthood of Southeastern Virginia — recipient of a 2010 grant from Komen — and whose wife, Betsi, is a veteran of several Komen fundraising races and is currently battling breast cancer.

"It sounds almost trite, going through this with Betsi, but cancer doesn't care if you're pro-choice, anti-choice, progressive, conservative," Hurd said. "Victims of cancer could care less about people's politics."

I was shocked when I learned of the link between Komen and the abortion mill.

Planned Parenthood does a lot of good in lower economic communities. I'm continually baffled by people who have such vehement opposition to it.

Planned Parenthood is not an abortion mill.

It's a center that provides gynecological care for low-income and/or uninsured girls and women.

Planned Parenthood performed 332,278 abortions in the United States in 2009, according to a fact sheet the group published.

I know- right? WTF? Have these people never been poor?

Wait- seriously? Then why are people bitching at all? That number is about .03- so statistically insignificant. It might as well be 0. That's below the margin of error- it wouldn't even show up on a pie chart. How the hell are people justifying their bitching?

Which, as Im sure you know is a very small percentage of what they do as a whole.

I just looked it up. It's literally 3%- or a p value of .03, which is less then the .05 margin of error for a normal study. Again, it's below the chance of the body randomly deciding to autoabort. I mean, I'm pro-life, 'life-begins at zygote' and I can't justify outrage like that.

Then you aren't pro-life. Pro-lifers would cut funding to anything that has directly resulted in a single abortion.

I am sure Planned Parenthood has done some good. Encouraging and endorsing abortions is not one of them. Killing an unborn child is not good planned parenting.

And here I thought Ham was the most ignorant dumb ass in this thread.

Everyone knows you are a dumbass fuck against anything good, RoryN. Too bad you were not aborted as well. You really think I care if anyone dislikes me for not wanting to kill unborn babies?

Planned Parenthood is a clinic lower income women and teens can go to and be assured of quality medical care and sexual education at a pay rate based on their own income.

According the 2009 Planned Parenthood fact sheet, the number of services by category are as follows:

35% STD testing/treatment
35% contraception
16% cancer screening/prevention
10% other women's health services
3% abortion services
1% other

LMAO! RoryN? Really? Keep being the ignorant idiot you are, you're really good at it.

What you looked up is not a study. There is no 'margin of error' because there is no sample. There is no sample because there is no study.

3 cents is 3% of a dollar. That doesn't mean there is a 5% margin of error, and that 3 cents could also be 8% or -2% of a dollar.

You're correct. Hell, it's only a million babies every three years.

So you feel we should simply shut down all medical facilities that provide abortion services? All emergency hospitals, clinics, obgyn's?

its really not a question about abortion
PP doesn't do "most" abortions, so why target them?

Hey! I got it right!

Well, I got my stats from psychinfo and did the math based on the records for the past 5 years. That means that I did a comparative study- not an experiment. There are plenty of studies. I'm actually proud of myself. I totally got it right. You ever take a statistics class? Anything can be a study if you can get enough info on it. I don't know why I didn't just Google it.
