There goes the Neighborhood!

We had one of those in our apartment complex pool in Bangkok once. Our balcony was right over the pool. The python would drape itself in the pool drain lip under the deck edging over the pool and only come out for scare purposes. It was amazing how many people pooh poohed us saying there was a python in the pool as they got up on the diving board. (Sort of like all of the indignant posters on the forum who just know their stories are protected and that they will successfully go to court when they are stolen and reposted ) The vibration on the board would tempt the head of the python out and the diver would try his/her best to stay suspended in the air when they realized the snake really was there. The snake never went after anyone who landed in the pool (and quickly scampered out) though.

A friend , who played golf in Bangkok, said that you didn't go into the rough after a ball. There were too many cobras in the bushes.

There most definitely were cobras everywhere. I watched a cobra climb the outside of my office window one day. My office was on the 15th floor (not marked as such, but since 13 is unlucky, the Thai did everything they could to not reach that number).

You must have had a very rich friend. I gave up golf when I moved to Bangkok, because I couldn't afford it there.

I love California. The only snakes we have to worry about wear suits at the Capitol building.

That's been a problem here for some time. It's getting to the point where the pythons are challenging the alligators for the position of apex predator. There have been horrific battles between gators and snakes, some lasting as long as 24 hours. In some cases, neither animal survives.

Here, you don't chase your ball into the water. I've seen 8 foot gators sunning themselves on golf courses in the vicinity of water hazards. I don't know how the divers go in after them.
