Many Muslims hate Israel because they feel they stole the land they live on. They hate America for defending them. They feel America is a puppet nation for Israel.

Why do we defend Israel? Is it to keep a friendly foothold in the Middle East? If oil is no longer needed will we abandon Israel?

The whole issue of Israel is a mystery to me. I am far from anti-Semitic. I just do not understand the US defending a people who took a land by force of arms denying those that live their the land that was theirs because "God" promised it to them. Considering they killed Gods only begotten son you would think we would give them a big old "fuck you". Do you think guilt for doing the same to the Native Indians or is it part of Gods secret plan?

The basic reason is that neither of the US political parties, especially the Dems, can afford to piss off Jewish voters. Also, AIPAC is one of the most vocal advocate groups/ lobbiest organisations in DC.

I think if I was president I would tell AIPAC to suck it. The Jews that live in America are my concern. Does AIPAC grease American politicians? Do they have a lot of power?

I wonder if Busybody is a AIPAC lobbyist. He sure hates Obama and Obama is not really strongly pro Israel. Obama characterized Israels president as a liar.

Wiki is your friend.

^^^^Propaganda

If the whole issue of Israel is "a mystery" to you, then you must have gotten awfully smart awfully quick to brand the Wiki article as propaganda.

I took your request for any and all information at face value. I thought the first two sections of the article "Attitude toward the Zionist movement" and "Recognition of the state of Israel" were free of any particular bias. I did not read the rest of the article, and while I think our basic alliance with Israel is reasonable given our mutual interests in the region, I would say the same thing about our alliance with Saudi Arabia, Egypt and other Middle East states. Support for an alliance does not mean one has to be an apologist for everything the ally does.

My point is that if anyone wants to understand what is going on with the United States and Israel today, it is best to start at the beginning. IMHO, that beginning is best defined as the period from the 19th century birth of Zionism up through America's recognition of the state of Israel.

For better or worse, everything seems to flow naturally from that historical perspective.

First Israel stole nothing, the one thing Gingrich is right about the Palestinians are an invented people.

Second al the land that Israel won in 67 was defeating other nations who attacked them

No different than the southwest the U.S holds.

Finally we support them because the U.S is a force for good(know it sounds corny) and we don't side with the sucessors to the Naxis and Pol Pot

Force for good?

Are good only extends towards financial interests.

We support Israel so strongly because of the political influence of the Israel lobby. Also because of the influence of the largely pro-Israel media in the US (including most left, right, and center leaning media). This is simply a factual statement, though its socially unacceptable to point this fact out. Still, it is what it is. Its a testament to the political skill of the Israel lobby and its supporters mainly.

Personally, I am neutral regarding Israel. I do support a state for the Palestinians based on pre-1967 borders. Israel is a de facto reality, and I don't have a problem with it existing. We should cultivate friendly relations with all Middle Eastern countries, like George Washington recommended.
