When the sassy, rebel lass was just a wee fourteen, the socialists had to detain her to stop her from following her individual dream...

...so she ran away, and the man was sent to round her up and bring her back to his security, against her will.

Finally, after 10 months of statists doing their best to abort an individual's calling, a judge finally relented and allowed the young lady to set sail...

...but, alas, the collective will still not recognize this individual's unique accomplishment, still enveloping themselves in the disingenuous cloth of herd protection:

"Guinness World Records has refused to certify Dekker's voyage because it no longer takes note of records for youngest sailors to discourage dangerous attempts."

Considering that 90% of her peers can't get their ass of the couch and hands off the game controllers (those that do usually end up up a stump) I really appreciate the drive and accomplishment of these young people. Not only that, there are 10 yr olds in all western countries involved in gangs and shooting others. I don't see anyone using the law to prevent and stop them in the same way that the authorities took to this issue.

Are age controls needed? Maybe, there is a 10 yr old aircraft pilot in the US.
Assess the individual for aptitude and ability, don't disqualify the young automatically.

Anyone who remembers the background to this case will see things a little differently than the opener to this thread. We have no evidence that the family court and social workers in the Netherlands were 'socialist'. They, along with her mother, who initially opposed the trip, negotiated with her to agree a delay to her initial plans to get more schooling, that she went in a bigger boat than she'd originally planned, that she took more preparatory courses and learned to ocope with sleep-deprivation. I suspect all these things stood her in good stead even though they were pressed on her by the nanny state.

Much of the reporting along the way has been influenced by her father, an obviously loving father but an erratic man whom she partly cared for when she was very young and he had a bad patch.

I am full of praise for the girl too. Who said I wasn't? But I'm glad she took some of the advice of her Mum and the dreaded social workers. Like any awkward cuss, she's a doubtful poster-child for any cause. And frankly, in any community, whether Statist, libertarian, religious or hunter-gatherer or whatever, somebody needs to look out for the interests of a 13-year-old (as she originally was). A melancholy development of the late 20th century, for instance, was the revelation that many children are not safe from their own parents, nor from religious figures of authority.

Oh, and I am fussy about language. I don't like the use of the word 'socialist' where it doesn't belong.
