MU's argument (like Pirate Bay's before) is that they didn't host illegal material. That has been rejected by US authorities. It's not a very long legal stretch from there to put Pay Pal in the firing line.

Why would paypal be held accountable?
It's like saying a bank that facilitates a transfer offshore to a tax haven is accountable because they aided tax evasion.

But can they be found accountable for that?
I don't believe so - mainly because going after intermediary service providers opens up a whole can of worms that would be too difficult to prosecute.
There's probably a clause that says it's the end-user's responsibility to ensure they are not acting illegally when using the service.

I haven't read a newspaper or watched tv for a week or so, so I haven't been caught up on the news.
Megaupload is probably not protected in the same way that paypal is - didn't Kazaa try the same defense? Didn't work for them as I recall.
