Sonic the Hedgehog!

Sonic the Hedgehog Triple Review!

Okay, so the other day I went into Target and picked up The original and complete Sonic The Hedgehog series on DVD. I remember watching this as a kid on Saturday mornings, and even though I was a die-hard Nintendo fan, Sonic was always one of my favorite characters growing up. Re-watching the show now, he's changed significantly since then, but I still love it! I finished the series tonight and figured I'd do a review of it. But I'm not content reviewing just one series, I'm going to do three!

Sonic The Hedgehog!

First off is the original series called "Sonic the Hedgehog!" which is what I purchased. Now there are essentially two main continuities for the Sonic the Hedgehog Universe. First of all are the video games themselves. The second is the Archie comic universe, which is what this series is based on. Personally, I prefer the comic storyline to the video game's, which is weird for me to say. Be that as it may, I truly love the way the comic series takes the characters from the games and expands upon them, giving them all extensive back-stories and origins. Not only that, but for every character from the game it seems there are 5 more original characters to go with it. The result is an expansive universe with a rich and engaging story and characters you can truly get behind and get attached to.

"Sonic The Hedgehog!" takes place during the early years of the comic, which in turn is based off of Sonic the Hedgehog 1 & 2 for the Genesis. In this setting, a man known as Dr. Robotnik has taken over the world of Mobius and enslaved its' people by turning them into robots. During his initial take over of the capitol, several children escaped from the city and were taken to a safe haven called Knot Hole. Warp ahead 10 years from that point, and these children have become freedom fighters, dedicated to removing Robotnik and his assistant Snively from power and restoring the people of Mobius to their former selves. Among them is of course our hero, Sonic. Voiced by Jaleel White (Yes THAT Jaleel White), Sonic is the fastest thing on the planet, and he knows it. He is the leader of the freedom fighters (although he leaves the planning and strategizing to the others) and is dedicated to stopping Robotnik and protecting his friends. Sonic is often reckless and can get himself and the others into a lot of trouble, but he is a loyal friend and will always help those who need it. He also has an obsession with chili dogs and has an ego the size of a planet.

Joining him is Princess Sally, the daughter of the deposed King and tactician of the group. Along with her supercomputer AI Nicole, she is the brains behind the freedom fighters organization and the glue that holds them together. Her constant companion and the powerhouse and trainer of the group is Bunny, a southern belle who was very nearly "roboticized." The others saved her, but not before her legs and left arm were changed to metal. She did however get to keep her free will and her robotic limbs grant her incredible strength. Rotor is the team mechanic and technological genius. There's also Antoine, a French prissy boy whose cowardice and lack of devotion to the cause is constantly causing trouble for the team. Of course there's also Tails, the only other in game character used for the series besides Sonic and Dr. Robotnik. He is just a young boy, but already shows great promise and dedication, as well as a keen intellect. At this point he's just barely scratching the surface of his potential. Finally there's Sonic's Uncle Chuck. Sir Charles Hedgehog was a genius working at the palace, and was the original creator of the Roboticizer, the machine that turns regular Mobians into robots. Though it was originally meant to extend the lives of the old and sickly, They soon realized that it had the horrible side-effect of removing the person's free will. Realizing the terrible mistake he had made, Charles destroyed the machine and the plans for it. However, unbeknownst to Charles, Dr. Robotnik had stolen the plans before they could be destroyed and had created his own version of the machine. Sadly, Charles would be one of the first victims of Robotnik's Roboticizer. However, many years later Sonic and the others manage to return his free will, though he was still stuck in a robotic body. Since then, Chuck acted as a spy for the freedom fighters, feeding them vital information.

Sonic the Hedgehog is actually a pretty dark series, but I like it that way. You get more emotionally invested in the characters. Plus it does add some humor to it, so it's not like it's depressing or anything, but it is very engaging.

The Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog

To me "The Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog" is everything that "Sonic the Hedgehog!" isn't. This series is more like your classic Looney Tunes type of show. First off, this series features just a few main characters. You have Sonic and Tails on one side, and they make life miserable for Dr. Robotnik and his mechanical cronies Scratch (a Chicken robot), Grounder (a round green robot on treads) and Coconuts (a Monkey robot). Robotnik and his goons are constantly trying to catch Sonic or mess with the citizens of Mobius in some way, and Sonic always finds a way to stop them. This series is all about the humor, and adds an updated flair to a classic formula.

That being said, don't look for any deep stories or memorable moments here, because you won't find them. :p

I should note that there's actually another series called Sonic Underground, but I try to block that series out of my mind as much as possible.

Sonic X

Fast forward many, many years to the most recent series, "Sonic X." While "Sonic the Hedgehog!" borrowed its stories from the comic universe, Sonic X is mostly a retelling of various storylines from the video game universe, specifically the 3D games such as Sonic Adventure 1 & 2. Oddly enough however, the final season is actually an original storyline. Sonic X follows the story of Sonic and his friends as they get transported from Mobius to Earth with Dr. Robotnik in tow. There they meet a young boy named Chris, whose parents are both very famous and very wealthy. Sonic and Chis form a powerful friendship right from the start, much like the connection Sonic has with Tails. Speaking of, Tails has become a technological genius and becomes fast friends with Chris' grandfather, who is a scientist and inventor. Joining Sonic and Tails is Knuckles, Sonic's off and on again rival; Amy Rose, who is madly in love with Sonic and proclaims herself to be his boyfriend; and Cream and her little companion Cheese. Along the way they meet other characters from the video games, such as Rouge the Bat, a jewel thief, and the ever popular Shadow, an experiment designed to be the ultimate being but who struggles to find his calling and place in the world.

Sonic X is a happy medium between the previous two series. It's not nearly as dark as "Sonic the Hedgehog!" but it's nowhere near the slapstick comedy routine that is "The Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog." There's a good balance of action and humor. I quite enjoyed this series to be honest, though it could have been better. Also for a series called Sonic X it doesn't seem to feature a whole heck of a lot of him, instead focusing on the other characters.

There are enjoyable things about all three series, but to me my favorite is still "Sonic the Hedgehog." You really do make an emotional connection with the characters, which is something I see far too little of in today's action series.

Finally, as always, my ratings:
