More than one category?

I wondered whether it was possible to place the same story in more than one category.

I have just posted a long story, which has attracted quite a lot of adverse comments. Of course it has many faults (as all my work does), but the main complaint seems to be repetition of the physical aspects.

Had there been a category for 'Femdom' I think I would have placed it under that heading rather than 'non-consent, reluctance'.

As it stands, is it possible to perhaps also post it under 'Fetish'? Another thought is to change it to the Fetish genre. Does anyone know if this is a difficult process?

Jane, it would help if you'd post a link to the story so we can check it out. I can't tell from what you've said here where it might fit better. But, no, you can't put one story in multiple categories.

I remember running across this one. I scanned the first page then (when I didn't see any mention of a "governess" at all) went to the bottom and checked out how many Lit pages we were talking about, here.

I was floored when I saw that it was 36.

I don't really have that kind of time for "just" a NonConsent story. At least in Novels/Novellas, you have no right to be surprised.

Generally, I like Victorian discipline stories; they can be some of the best twisted efforts without having to get physically weird to push the boundaries, usually because so much of the arousal is in their head.

I do not really know if you've achieved this or not...it's just plain too long and the title confused me when I didn't see a governess in the first 3 pages (of 36).

Is there anything wrong with considering cutting it up into different posted chapters and describing each appropriately in the description line?

You are right, of course. I amaze myself at my stupidity sometimes. Had I looked through the categories a little more closely, I am sure I would have come to your conclusion... eventually!

Actually, the governess does not appear until quite late on. I just felt the use of the word 'governess' would give some indication towards the genre of the story.

Jane, it's up to you to break up your stories. You can have one large file and save pieces to smaller files -- just copy and paste the text into a new file and name it "story_ch01.doc" or something. Then submit that smaller file with Chapter 1 (or whatever) in the title. I generally don't read anything longer than about four pages on Lit, I simply don't have the time, and I imagine a lot of others feel the same. I also don't usually submit anything longer than that.

I write my stories in blocks of 8-12k words; I'm not saying it's the best way and it does have disadvantages but then I have a smaller installment to submit.

Breaking it up would also enable you to put different chapters in different categories, which would solve your original question.

With formatting, the best thing is to keep it simple. Double space between paragraphs -- that makes it easier to read on a screen. Put each line of dialogue in its own paragraph (which I believe is standard anyway). Don't try to mess with the format of the text itself to much -- stick with regular and italic, and bold or underline if you need it. I'm not sure what formatting problems you had before, but Lit doesn't take a lot of fancy stuff, so I'd keep it as simple as possible, which is also easier on you.

SA PennLady, Editor of the Year 2011, gives very good advice, that any author, experienced or beginner, is well-advised to read and heed. Four Lit pages is the limit for most readers; very rarely is anything much longer going to hold the readers' attention in the Internet Age.

Yet I can think of one exception--Grandmaster Sir_Nathan's 37-page "Culture Shock", that was an all-night read. But that is truly a case of the exception proving the rule. The story has to be truly brilliant to attain that level.

I have just submitted one under two pages long, as an experiment to see how it is received.

The breaking-it-up-into-chapters is best. You should do this over a period of time. I've found it best to submit a chapter, then wait until it posts and make sure it is posted correctly and completely before submitting the next.

The stories I write are longer (my current is a 140K word novel with 31 chapters) and they are literary in nature. So an entire story never fits into one of the sexual practice/orientation/fetish categories you find here or on other sites (neither Literotica nor other sites - free or paid - have a category for erotic literature), so I have to submit the different chapters over a variety of categories (and often a wide variety - the current story has chapters posted to everything from BDSM to Exhibition/Voyeur to Non-Consent/Reluctance to Romance).

I just posted a story of two pages. It certainly seems to do better than the longer ones.

Of the longer ones, I think there are a lot of readers feeling let down, when they have read several pages before deciding that they don't like it.
