Can anyone think of something more well known than "Smoke On The Water?"
It's universal.
It's universal.

Sweet child o mine. G 'n' R.
opening bars of Beethoven's 5th
opening notes to Queen's 'don't stop me now'?
in fact, plenty of Queen's songs are easily identifiable by their first few notes
(....in the West. We're the minority.)That's my first reaction. I've heard it said elsewhere.
The opening of Bach's Tocatta and Fugue is pretty universal as well.
Second one here was based on an existing French folk song, rather than vice-versa, so the credit has to go farther back...Yes, I can think of at least two! Everyone from age 3 and up can recognize these within 3 notes, max.
Bach's Toccata and Fugue in D minor
Mozart's Variation in C Ah, vous dirai je, maman
That one, Layla or Satisfaction by the Stones
Nathan East playing the living shit out of the bass...This is my all-time favorite live rendition of Layla.
Clapton is walking around the stage noodling on the guitar quietly for 30 or so seconds, then at 42 seconds you hear the stage amps kick on to full power and the roar is so intense when they kick off the intro that the bass guitar player jumps.
