A sleeping super-volcano in Germany is showing worrying signs of waking up.

It's lurking just 390 miles away underneath the tranquil Laacher See lake near Bonn and is capable of ejecting billions of tons of magma.

This monster erupts every 10 to 12,000 years and last went off 12,900 years ago, so it could blow at any time.

And as a bonus it will cover France and Eng-er-land in ash!

There are many more likely candidates for eruptions:

Yellowstone park, the volcano under Auckland, New Zealand; several in Hawaii, more in Iceland, Vesuvius and Etna in Italy...

Carbon dioxide bubbling from a lake? That happens in many lakes without any evidence of volcanic causes.

After Fukashima Germany closed all their reactors. They get their nuclear electricity from France now. Mainly because they don't currently have enough generating capacity

If you must, Etna is a pretty safe bet. Geological activity has been progressing westwards through the Med for the past few years. I wonder how long it will be till that big lump of the Canaries falls into the Atlantic and creates the tsunami that is supposed to wipe out the eastern American seaboard.
