It's a great solution to a problem that doesn't exist.
Just another example of what passes for "politics" in this country: instead of dealing with problems that actually exist, people create "issues" out of whole cloth as a distraction, to be divisive and dismissive.
Say requiring Voter ID is wrong and you're accused of being in favor of voter fraud. That's a straw man argument.
I tend to agree, I havent been able to find any actual proof that voter fraud is a serious issue. However 21 million Americans of voting age dont have a vaild ID, and so wouldnt be able to vote.
If they don't have ID, how do you know there are 21,000,000 of them?
There are lots of things you need ID for, however not sure what any of those things have to do with voting.
Also, in order to vote you would need a vaild, state issued ID. Which doesnt include things like, out of state ID's, student ID's or expired ID's, which other places that require ID do accept. One of the largest groups who would have issues voting are the elderly. Many of whom dont have a valid ID, or a birth certificate, because they were born at home.
Also identity theft is a problem, although... I havent found anything that suggests people are running around stealing other peoples identity and using it to vote.
to vote in the first place requires you to register. to register requires you to show ID. not sure what the issue is.

There is a diffrence between have a social security # and having
a state ID ....
And they find these things out, the way they always do...
someone somewhere crunches the numbers i suppose.
You prolly never seen an atom either but they plenny of them around.
Do you have an objection to being asked to show ID when you go to vote? Why in the world would it bother you to prove who you say you are? It seems to me a more logical concern would be that someone else would use your name to vote.
Thats not true in most state
The 1st time I registered to vote I
filled out a card at my high school
no ID required.
It bothers me because
it prevents people from voting.
The only thing requiring a state issued photo ID
does is make it harder for
1) the elderly
2) the poor
3) the young
to vote
Do you honestly think voter fraud is such a serious issue that
steps need to be taken to prevent people from voting?
in fact not only did I need to prove who I was i had to read from the deceleration of independents out loud to prove I knew English !!!!!!!

Do you honestly think showing ID is too much of a burden on an individual who wants to vote? Do you think the elderly, the poor and the young should prove who they are when the register to vote?
I read somewhere that one of the states that is getting a voter ID law is issuing free IDs. (South Carolina maybe?)If a state issue ID had been required I would never have been able to vote
I didnt get a DL until I was 20, didnt have a need to drive.
I am uncomfortable with laws that
places restrictions on the ability of people to vote
I would be less upset if getting say a state
issued ID were free
The problem is not that they want to demand ID. The problem is that the demand is patched on to a society that doesn't support it. No universality for SSN, no nation wide ID standard, a patchwork of inconsistent citizen registrys, (Which is why you have to resort to that voter registration circus in the first place.) eligibility laws left to local and state governments, which makes them contadictory from place to place, red tape en masse to get to the point whete an ID can be issued...
We have mandatory photo ID for voting in Sweden. The difference is that we have a mandatory national NIN and registered residency for every citizen (and permanent non-citizen). What this means is that if I want a photo ID that's valid everywhere, I need one thing: A photo. Or I stroll to the nearest post office and have them take one for me. One phone call, one click on a website or a filled out form at the post office is all the paperwork. About a week later, my shiny new ID arrives in the mail. Free of charge.
Some Americans get all creeped out when I descibe this, and starts talking about 1984-ish statism and control society. ("Does the Gub'mint know where you live?!") But yeah, if you want to demand ID of your citizens, that's the sort of infrastructure you need to make it work practically.

Except the birth certificate you need to get the ID will cost ya. If you can even get one. Tricky for first gen immigrants and many seniors.
Slowly but surely all States are going to facial recognition on their driver license. Then the FBI and Homeland Security scans all licenses for criminals.![]()
