Romney wants ads during 'Sesame Street'
Republican presidential hopeful says he'll cut off funding for PBS

"We're not going to kill Big Bird," Mitt Romney said. "But Big Bird is going to have advertisements."

It's safe to say that none of the Republican candidates for president are quite as enamored with public funding for the arts as the Democrats are, but Mitt Romney was making it an issue Wednesday, claiming he'll even cut off PBS.

To be sure, Big Bird and the rest of the "Sesame Street" Muppets probably aren't endangered. They'll just have to go commercial, if Romney gets his way.

In order to balance the budget, Romney told supporters in Iowa Wednesday, he'll "stop certain programs."

"Close them. Turn 'em off. Even some you like," he said. "You might say, 'I like the National Endowment for the Arts.' I do," Romney said. "I like PBS. We subsidize PBS. Look, I'm going to stop that. I'm going to say that PBS is going to have to have advertisments."

"We're not going to kill Big Bird," Romney said. "But Big Bird is going to have advertisments. All right?"

"I happen to think it's immoral for us to keep spending money we don't have, and passing on to our kids our obligations," Romney told supporters at Homer's Deli in Clinton, Iowa. "My test is, is a program so critical that it's worth borrowing money from China to pay for it."

The Corporation for Public Broadcasting, which delivers a portion of the funding for PBS and other public-broadcasting entities, spent $422 million in 2010 while the NEA has given more than $4 billion in grants since it was created in 1965.

The country needs money, so let's take it, again, from the people on the bottom instead of the people at the top.

Jesus Christ. Romney's a haircut.

You can tell just in the way he refers to it that he hates Sesame Street.

I wonder if he'd like it more if they introduced a character who wore protective underwear...

PBS should have been cut off years ago. This just makes me want to vote for him even more.

He don't care either which way about Sesame Street.

He cares about winning. And right now, winning equals pandering to morons. Specifically morons who hates Sesame Street.

yes, keep trying to pretend that he's a worthwhile candidate... he's about as interesting as john kerry.

The Children's Television Workshop gears the show to preschoolers (now, anyway -- it used to be for slightly older kids), and these kids can't tell the difference between a commercial and a program. There's not a chance in the fucking world they'd ever put a commercial on in the middle of Sesame Street.

Do they have 'em in the middle of Spongebob or Teletubbies (or whatever the hell kidlets watch these days)? Or are there laws and stuff?

LOL! You guys are too easy to fuck with.....

Happy holidays guys!!

They aren't produced by The Children's Television Workshop and don't have the same mission statement.

Only at the end.

(Brought to you by the letters A...C...G...and by the number 9.) :D

The "brought to you" bit was part of the show's strategy. If kids can be influenced to buy cereal with Madison Avenue techniques then use it to teach them math and reading.

You have to lose your ironic :D now.

Spongebob is for an older audience and is totally awesome!

Just asking cause there are laws and regulations in many countries about aiming ads at kids.

It is for an older audience than Teletubbies. But kids from crawling to puberty watch it. And while it is indeed awesome, Ren & Stimpy it's not.

If I'm not mistaken, the long-time creators and producers of Sesame Street have a short list of things the show will never do. And I'm pretty sure that, from the 70s up until today, at the very top of that list is airing a commercial during the show.

So, Romney can say he wouldn't "kill Big Bird", but I'd bet you the moon that, if he got his way, Sesame Street would be no more. And, sad as intelligent parents and kids around the country would be, they'd place all of the blame on Romney and not PBS.

Lots of parents who aren't idiots in the USA. Doesn't seem like a demographic you wanna piss off...

Because Obama has done such a great job in 4 years? Really? Do you really think Obama is worth 4 more years? If so, please tell me why. IM me if you like, curious to hear this.

I'll wait....

Are you sure preschoolers are even watching Sesame Street? With iPads, Video's, Baby Einstein, ets, and the list grows. Also, I like WordGirl, not sure if that's PBS or not....
