He's signed and sealed to be very quiet about what M3 is working on but since this one is out its ok to blab. June will be here in a blink... at least it seems that way now that I'm older.

I do kinda hate it when prequels seem so much more modern and advanced than the sequentially later movies that were made first, though. Here's hoping he doesn't pull a Phantom Menace.

Not too worried. It looks like the basic design is mostly keeping in line with the tech-look of the first Alien. Of course, they can't make it completely retro, but at least the spacesuits appear similar. And from what I've read, I believe that this joint isn't a totally direct prequel, but more of a sideways journey of something that happened about fifty or sixty years before the Nostromo set out, so there is a little breathing room for more liberties with the tech. Gonna be solid no matter how you slice it, methinks.

I am a huge, huge, huge fan of the Alien series so you have no idea how excited I am by this. That being said, Scott made it clear the adult Alien will not be in the movie.

There is a reason for that sometimes. In the case of Star Wars it's because the prequels take place before a galactic civil war. During the war people and ships have been through a lot and in the case of the Rebels they don't have the resources for newer weapons like the Empire does. It makes sense if you think about it.
As for the Alien movies, the technology isn't really any different, it's the people involved that are. In Alien they're essentially oil rig workers. They're dirty and tired and are using equipment that is meant for towing and sleeping and nothing else. In Aliens they're Marines who are high tech but not flashy.
The other two movies follow more along the lines of the first one in terms of tech and people involved..
This prequel is supposed to be more about scientists who would be using newer equipment and better suited for the job at hand.

Yeah, yeah....it still feels incongruous. I've given it thought as well. Even if some og the technology isn't available, it shouldn't have changed that much. "Mother," the original computer in Alien used DOS for fuck's sake. Broken down, old, and not-cutting-edge is one thing....technology, ships, weapons, etc that look like they're from a whole different era is different.

Not really. Right now, here on the cusp of 2012, there are probably institutes or businesses still working with DOS or DOS-equivalent software and x86 processor systems because it's adequate for their work or too expensive to upgrade to cutting edge technology that isn't practical or particularly useful for their purposes. And how many countries still drive vehicles from 30+ years ago? Still use weapons left over from World War II? Just because better technology exists doesn't mean everyone has it, needs it, or can afford it.

George Lucas - who really needs to spare us from any further attempts to write or direct - notwithstanding....I agree. His prequels were an insult to the Star Wars series.

You can split hairs all you want....of course there are places still using old stuff. I worked for a company that is STILL using a DOS-based system. Still and all, I find some prequels too modern for their supposed chronological place. Enterprise was an example of a prequel I thought was pretty well done....it was clearly more modern-looking than the original Star Trek, yet they didn't have the technology the crew of the NCC-1701 had despite it being filmed decades before.

If you can't see what I'm saying with my original example of Phantom Menace compared to the original Star Wars films, then I don't know how else to convey my perception of the prequel issue.
