Well, I'm going to be taking figure drawing in the spring. As of right now I'm ridiculously shy about drawing the nude human form from life, so I figured I'd start a thread here to kind of practice :) Working on one now, hope it goes well lol

Hi there -

I've worked with nudes for many, many years as a photographer. Regardless of your medium, the approach to working with a nude model is little different than working with a clothed or draped model.

Respect their space and give them clear direction - that pretty much sums it up. It's also a safe presumption that because you'll be in a class, the models you'll be working with will at least be reasonably experienced. I'm sure you'll do fine.

Your sketch looks interesting. As a photographer, I've always been envious of those blessed with the ability to draw.

Thanks. that's much appreciated :) And it works the other way as well. I draw and sculpt, so I admire photographers :)

Nice work! I wouldn't worry too much about being shy. I've taken figure drawing classes as well (ages ago), but it's only awkward in the beginning. Before you know it, it will be just like drawing anything else.

The only time I was really embarrassed was when I knocked on the door and the model opened. I hadn't expected to be confronted by a naked guy at that moment. Plus, I was 18 and a virgin, haha! Fortunately, it was the wrong room so I just quickly made my exit. I don't think I would've been able to draw right then. ;)

First, sorry for the delay in response. Yay finals crunch. I think I'll be fine as long as I stick to thinking about it academically rather than sexually. :)

June you hit it right on the money......it is awkward for about as long as it takes the instructor to re-engage the class back to their pages, unless..............the model is the absolutely gorgeous curly haired, ice blue-eyed, perfectly proportioned brunette ex-girlfriend of the roomate you took the course with, and neither he, or (yes, wait for it) his new girlfriend have looked up yet. That following eternity was a tad awkward.

Sorry to hijack......once you start looking for how forms relate to each other and relative space, you will cease to see the naked homeless guy in front of you. I promise.

although I never went to art school, whatever I draw or paint is self taught. While practicing with human figures what I figured out was that the torso is the most important entity. If you can get that right, eventually the whole human form will manifest on the sheet of paper in proper proportions! (well .. most of the time! :D)

Regards and Good Luck!
