I had a comment on one of my stories, The comment was from a reader, Copy Carver, in which he told me.

"In most cases, I'd call STET on the story but this one is good enough to deserve being made even better."

I am not familiar with the term and have no ideal what it means. The comment was made on the story, "The Difference Between Homeless and Helpless" Listed in the 'Erotic Horror' section. I am now going through my stories and trying to re-write them. This guy made some good points about the story and I want to understand what he is telling me.

"STET" is a typographical term. It basically means "keep as is." It's usually used when a copyeditor or proofreader marks a word or phrase to be changed, but then decides not to change it, but keep it as it's on the proof.

thanks

Thank you for the help.

Editors also underline the word(s) to be left unchanged with a line of dots.

I was trying to remember the last time I marked up newsd copy by hand. Must be a little over 30 years. Hell of a time learning how to use the IBM memory typewriters, then came a Wang minicomputer system, then PCs took over.

Like Morse Code, though, it's still a useful skill at times. I'm teaching an English writing class, and because the kids don't all use MS Word, I'm correcting homework by hand. Gave them a table of copyeditor's symbols to refer to and it goes pretty fast.

I was handediting for mainstream publishers as late as 1999.
