Greek or Roman, who gets your adoration?

My choice is the collective group of females, known as Maenads, who assisted Dionysus in his revelry; specifically, the most significant members of the Thiasus, the god's retinue. Their name literally translates as "raving ones".

Hmmm...I was always partial to Diana, Goddess of the Hunt...also known as Artemis.

And the goddess Athena.:)

Hermes. He's witty, naughty, and speedy, the god for thieves, orators, travelers, shepherds... what's not to love?

I'll also always have a soft spot in my heart for Demeter. She has the entire life-cycle thing going for her--a classic in every culture. But when I think of Demeter, I remember how my mother used to tell me the story of Persephone, Hades, and Demeter every time she prepared a pomegranate for us, usually when my father was away on business. She said it was the perfect story of a mother's love for her daughter, and while I didn't quite understand it then, I do now. :)

Hebe, provider of unending alcohol.

However, my version of Hebe comes from Thorne Smith's Night Life of the Gods, so might not be truly classical...

Not a god, I know, but I like Charon.

If I have to pick an official god, I think Herakles/Hercules. I'd like to say Thanatos, but we just don't know enough about him for me to know what he was about.

Personally, I like the Norse pantheon. I find them more interesting to read about.

My choice is the collective group of females, known as Maenads, who assisted Dionysus in his revelry; specifically, the most significant members of the Thiasus, the god's retinue. Their name literally translates as "raving ones".

The Maenads aren't exactly great revellers. They rent King Pentheus of Thebes into pieces, with his mother, one of the maenads, ripping off his head.

They were also all supposed to have been impregnated by Pan, or a man impersonating Pan, who would pay for this act by being torn to death.

Dionysus sent the maenads to kill Orpheus, but the maenads also killed their husbands. Orpheus' severed head, still singing, floated down the river Hebrus and eventually to the island Lesbos. "It is said that Orpheus had condemned the Maenads promisccuity and preached homosexual love; Aphrodite was therefore no less angered than Dionysus. Her fellow-Olympians, however, could not agree that his murder had been justified, and Dionysus saved the Maenads' lives by turning them into oak-trees, which remained rooted to the ground. The Thracian men who had survived the massarce decided to tattoo their wives as a warning against the murder of priests; and the custom survives to this day."

All the above comes from Robert Graves' Greek Myths.

I always liked the story of Persephone. Poor thing was minding her business, next thing you know she's the queen of hell.

Kinda like when I met LC.;)

Og, I have a hardcover copy of Night Life of the Gods that I just lent to my brother. Thorne Smith, better known for Topper, is one of my favorites, thanks to a tip-off from Mom. And yes, I knew maenads had their bloody side, but not as well as your source stated. In my research, I did not find that book. Thanks. It was the description of the maenads' wild raves in front of the bonfire, deep in the woods, far away from all men, that caught my interest. That and the local women, who could not resist the opportunity to join in, much to their husbands' dislike.

Ragnarok - noun the final destruction of the world in the conflict between Aesir and the powers of Hel led by Loki - called also Twilight of the Gods

My favorie Olympian Goddesses are the Muses. My personal muse Diedre is a second cousin of Clio-Goddess of History. :D

Aphrodite, Stripper of the Gods!:D
More like 'Whore of the gods'. She has a kid with almost every god but her husband Hephaestus, and depending on how you interpret her origin, she was born from Poseidon ejaculating on the water.

Hmmm...I was always partial to Diana, Goddess of the Hunt...also known as Artemis.

And the goddess Athena.:)

You do know that Diana/Artemis was a sworn virgin, right? :D

Anyway, the greek and roman gods were all pansies. Sehkmet all the goddamn way!!!!!

I can never remember which ones are Greek, which ones are Roman, and which ones are Norse. So, I'm just going to guess.

My favorite greek goddess is Wonder Woman.

Greek and Roman Gods

There are the twelve Olympian gods with a brief description of each. The Greeks and Romans shared the same stories, but used different names.

Greek - Roman - Description

Zeus/Jupiter - Lord of the sky and supreme ruler of the gods. Known for throwing lightening bolts.

Poseidon/Neptune - Ruler of the sea. Brother of Zeus. Carried a three-pronged spear known as a trident.

Hades/Pluto - Ruler of the underworld and the dead. Brother of Zeus. Had a helmet which rendered its wearer invisible.

Hestia/Vesta - A virgin goddess and sister of Zeus. No distinct personality or part in myths. Goddess of the Hearth, the symbol of the home.

Hera/Juno - Zeus's wife and sister. Protector of marriage, spent most of her time punishing the many women Zeus fell in love with. Likes cows and peacocks.

Ares/Mars - God of war and son of Zeus and Hera. Likes vultures and dogs.

Athena/Minerva - Daughter of Zeus alone. She sprang from his head full-grown and in full armor. The protector of civilized life, handicrafts, and agriculture. Invented the bridle, and first to tame the horse. Likes Athens, olives, and owls.

Apollo/Apollo - Son of Zeus. Master musician, archer god, healer, god of light, god of truth, sun god. A busy god who likes the laurel tree, dolphins, and crows.

Aphrodite/Venus - Daughter of Zeus. Goddess of Love and Beauty. Likes the myrtle tree, doves, sparrows, and swans.

Hermes/Mercury - Son of Zeus. Wore wings on his sandals and his hat, thus was graceful and swift.

Artemis/Diana - Apollo's twin sister and daughter of Zeus. Lady of wild things and huntsman to the gods. As Apollo is the Sun, Artemis is the moon.

Hephaestus/Vulcan - Son of Hera, God of Fire. The only ugly and deformed god. Makes armor and weapons forged under volcanoes.

Other Gods

Gaea/Terra - Mother Earth

Asclepius/Aesculapius - God of medicine

Cronus/Saturn - God of the sky; Ruler of the Titans (Roman mythology: God of agriculture)

Demeter/Ceres - Goddess of grain

Dionysus/Bacchus - God of wine and vegetation

Eros/Cupid - God of love

Hypnos/Somnus - God of sleep

Rhea/Ops - Wife of Cronus/Saturn. Mother Goddess

Uranus/Uranus God - of the sky. Father of the Titans

Nike/Victoria - Goddess of Victory

Athene, the goddess of wisdom. Although she could be a right bitch if some one insulted her. ;)

I rather like the no nonsense side of Athena. Sexy and wise to boot. Not to mention she kicked some ass too

More like 'Whore of the gods'. She has a kid with almost every god but her husband Hephaestus, and depending on how you interpret her origin, she was born from Poseidon ejaculating on the water.

LOL. You say that like it's a bad thing. There is something to be said by the old school method of securing your own safety by having the dominant male's kid. Besides not one of the male Gods bitched except her cuckold of a husband huh?;)

I thought Orion was her lover? Hmmm

Well I am still a lot like her in many ways:)

Hebe, provider of unending alcohol.

However, my version of Hebe comes from Thorne Smith's Night Life of the Gods, so might not be truly classical...

I saw a statuette of Hebe in a local charity shop today.

I had to buy her. She looked cold and unloved.

Og, Hebe wanted to go home with you to be adored. By thinking and writing about her, you invoked her and she responded to your call. I wonder if Zeus and Hera are pleased by this thread because we are discussing their children or angered from the lack of proper respect. To keep things equal, I must say Zeus always impressed me greatly with his temper and lusty ways, and Hera must have been a powerhouse of her own to handle him.

I often long for the days of polytheism over this monotheism stuff, even though there is always disagreement over who is the One True God.

Anyone here a Tom Robbins fan and love Jitterbug Perfume, as much as I? Oh, where is Pan, when you need him the most?
