Steve Martin wins bluegrass award -- no joke

(CNN) -- It used to be that Steve Martin's music was a joke or at least part of the joke -- a prop in a comedy bit -- but no more.

Martin along with his touring band the Steep Canyon Rangers won entertainer of the year Thursday night at the 2011 International Bluegrass Music Awards in Nashville.

"Hey! @steepcanyon and I just won IBMA Entertainers of the Year!" Martin posted on his Twitter account.

Martin released his Bluegrass debut "The Crow: New Songs for the Five-String Banjo" in 2009, which was produced by John McEuen of the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band. Country and bluegrass heavyweights like Vince Gill, Earl Scruggs and Dolly Parton appeared on the album. Martin wrote or co-wrote 15 of the 16 tunes.

"Everyone knows that Martin can be very funny, but The Crow isn't a joke," said Steve Leggett on Allmusic.com. "It's a first-class banjo album."

Martin's banjo musings appeared on his first comedy album, 1977's "Let's Get Small," typically punctuating a silly song or serving as an interlude between gags and remained a part of his comedy gigs.

"It's a first-class banjo album."

Let that one sink in for a while, folks.

LOL! I know. Sounds like an oxymoron. No offense to those who like bluegrass.

But I really like Steve Martin.

While much more a fan of traditional rock instrumentation, I have to admit I love Bela Fleck and his banjo.
Also, the Animal Logic (Stewart Copeland, Stanley Clarke, and Deborah Holland) song "Someone to Come Home to" had a truly kickass banjo/bass rock solo.

the banjo: not just for twanging anymore!

Good for him. If he can paint well he'll complete a hat trick +1. Gifted is gifted.

is he really gifted or just willing to put in the 10,000 hours...

sometimes hard work is too readily dismissed.

I don't doubt he put the time in, but some remain average no matter how much time invested. And gifted and talented people are often such in more areas than one.

Steve Martin has been a professional quality banjo player for his entire career. One thing he learned at a young age, comics make more money than banjo players.

At a certain level. Bela Fleck has done alright.

And now he can indulge himself. More power to him.

There's tens of dollars to be made in bluegrass...

And all the jokes in bluegrass are about the banjo players.

People like Bela Fleck and Earl Scruggs earn tens of dollars? I don't think so.

Just because people are stupid enough to pay huge amounts of money for the dreck available in most record store today doesn't make it either good or significant.
