For several years now, my sole story submission to this site hasn't appeared in the top list, which is probably the only place it might get some reads. Buried as it is in the full story index, it's no wonder there have been only a handful of hits since the initial flurry.

I have sent three PMs to each of the site owners over the past three years, but got no reply.

I notice now that two stories I recently edited, by two different authors, were having the same problem. They didn't appear on the 30-day list where they should have. (Both are between 4.2 and 4.4 in voting in BDSM, have recently "aged out" on the 30-day list and don't have the ratings to make it into the 12-month list.)

I have not, and they say they have not, turned off voting or comments or otherwise done anything that should have caused the story not to appear on the list.

Has anyone had this problem and fixed it or prevented it the next time? Or does anyone know what the cause might be if it's not fixable?

Thanks.

You don't say how many votes they have. They have to attain a level of votes (different ones for different categories, I think) before they qualify for the top lists.

If the story doesn't have the votes to qualify, this isn't a system problem.

For the all-time toplist, almost all categories have a minimum vote total of 100. That's the most likely reason that your story isn't making the toplists.

If you happen to be in one of the few categories with a different minimum vote total, you can usually determine what the minimum is by browsing the lists. Where the scores of several stories change by .01 to the next set of stories, the lowest vote totals will narrow it down.

4.79 157
4.79 125
4.79 112
4.79 101
4.78 250
4.78 229

This example is most likely the normal 100 vote minimum, because the transition happens at a story with barely over 100 votes. When you check several transitions, the pattern should narrow it down until you're fairly certain.

Thanks to both of you. I didn't know that.

It would seem to make sense, then to ask people in a preface to vote if they read your story. If the extra votes you collect pull it down, so be it; but without a lot of votes, the story will be buried anyway.
