Not really a rant so much, but I got a reader who was upset because I put some girl-girl stuff in one chapter of one story, and was rather put out because apparently authors "always add lesbians" which apparently ruined the story.
I'm sorry the reader didn't like it, but I can't and won't write stories based on what other authors "always" do. I just find it funny that I'm part of some conspiracy to put lesbians in all stories everywhere.
Don't flame me too hard, but I have to admit I have left criticism of stories based on this before. However, it has always been on stories that I have otherwise liked, with an after thought of something like "if I had to make one criticism it would be..." and qualified by "of course, this is just my opinion".
Everyone has their turn-ons and turn-offs and one of my turn-offs is stories that slip into cliche. One common example of that is a long multi-part story where suddently, in about part 3 or 4, the female protagonist discovers that she enjoys sex with women, despite never even considering it before. Another one is Incest stories where somehow the one-off moment of madness/weakness always turns into a rather unlikely 'permanent' relationship. I guess the reason these things become cliches is because a lot of authors and readers like them. But I don't think there's any harm in saying when you don't like it, providing the criticism is constructive.
