Not only is CEO Hastings and company moving forward with the price hikes, now Netflix is being split into two different companies.

I know they are having contract problems within the movie industry, but the whole communications thing and PR work with its' customers is really fucked up. I cancelled my membership a few months ago. Their stock is down by 1/2 since July. They've lost a hell of a lot more customers than anticipated.

Looks like Blockbuster, and companies like it, are going to benefit wonderfully.

It seems they're trying to appease Wall Street at the expense of their customer base.

Tone-deaf management, to be sure.

You seem to think Blockbuster matters anymore. They don't.
Netflix dealt with a problem in a manner that was less than ideal but they're hardly committing suicide. Until someone is able to match them over the long term they will continue to be the best at what they do.
As for splitting the company, that isn't really a big deal.

I take it you never subscribed to Netflix?

Netflix has already lost over 800,000 customers due to the combination of Netflix deciding to kill off their DVDs and a 60% price hike on their memberships.

Pissing off their DVD customer base is not the way to go. They should try to stay as low cost as possible and retain the combination of streaming and DVDs. Their streaming sucks half the time anyway. Most people still want the ability to slip a DVD or Blue-ray disc into the player and watch movies and shows comfortably on the TV. They do not want to rely solely on an unreliable stream-fed movie and deal with pauses or loosing the feed altogether. Besides, Netflix streaming service does not provide most new releases when they are available to the public. DVDs do.

And to many people, particularly the elderly and lower income, DVDs are a viable alternative to cable and satellite.

It's not a good idea to jump into the 'future' before people are ready to. Netflix
should let the DVD service die out at its own pace. A survey or two would have been the smart way to go before making such radical changes.

I don't think you understand the situation at all. Netflix is not giving up on DVD's and you can still have both options. The price structure was a mistake, they admit that, everyone knows that but what's done is done.
For some reason you think they've stopped shipping dvd's. Don't know where you get that unless you misunderstand the split of the company.

I never said they stopped shipping DVDS. Nor does Blockbuster really matter to me. Don't know where you get that. I understand the situation much better than you led yourself to believe I do. You only want to argue because you misinterpreted what I said. And led yourself to think I said something I didn't.

Yeah, I can't imagine where I thought you were saying they were stopping DVD service.

Nowhere does it say they are stopping dvd service. You obviously are not understanding the situation. They are splitting in two, one with dvds, one without. Same company, different names.
Stop being stupid.
^^^ This. I got the guy's goofy email in my spam this morning, and read his blog posting, too. Same services as now, but with two separate company names and two items on your cc bill if you use both. No other changes (except how badly they keep fucking up, after being cool for a decade).

I think the pricing is the only thing people are pissed about. The split doesn't really affect too many people because nowadays you either watch movies on dvd or streaming. Doesn't seem like many people do both anymore. Not enough to cause an uproar anyway.

Qwikster. <----

Self-destruction.

It's a really stupid name. Incredibly stupid. I recently stopped the dvd portion of Netflix because we didn't use it anymore and now I'm glad because I can't imagine being happy that my Qwikster movie has arrived.

As usual, you are right about everything.

They do not have to split into two companies. Be logical and use your business sense. They can still keep the two services combined. Netflix can put limits on the streaming in the same manner they do now with the DVDs. They can continue to bring out the new releases on DVD so long as the demand is still there. Did AT&T split into different companies when they introduced new services and started diversifying when they brought in 'U-Verse' and wireless services? I think not.

If you don't want to lose customers, you go with what customers want. Not put the investors ahead of the people that pay them.

So your idea is to put limits on unlimited streaming and introduce that to a customer base that is already fragile?

Do you understand Netflix current price packages work? There are different price ranges for different packages. Ranging from the lowest, which only allows one DVD and unlimited streaming to unlimited DVDS and unlimited streaming. And keep in mind, the streaming service only makes most movies available long AFTER they are readily available to the public elsewhere. Even there, there are no streams available for many of the DVDs customers rent from them.

Why continue to loose customers because of a combination of higher prices and lack of availability? That is the bulk of the complaints now, on top of several perks customers have lost, without explanation, since '07? One of the biggest complaints by far, is that Netflix is not communicating to customers and not listening to their complaints. Netflix used to be top notch when it came to communicating with their customers.

Now that Netflix wants to increase the costs by 60%, which is too high for many of its customers, they can compromise by keeping the costs relatively low by placing limits on the streaming movies. If the costs are kept low enough, the result will be more customers.

I was with Netflix for years. Why would anyone want to subscribe to two companies and have two different services, when they can continue to have both services for one price?

You rip, though, KRC. You don't need Netflix. Legit content pays the craftsmen. Keeps them employed. To you, Netflix is the tax your neighbor pays. Not you. You're slyer than that. Business model, KRC? You? You kill Netflix as you praise it. A lot of us do.... Don't even. If not Netflix, who's to collect for the crafts who made the gadjet?

Remember People's Express? No Frills-No Bullshit Airline. It was the last time any sane citizen could understand an airfare. Netflix is People's Express. Netflix has revolutionized and homogenized an entire market - ostensibly to fairly tax usage. Netflix pays the bill for the service it provides - and it is a service that is provided. You'll eat it long before you know what you've eaten.

She is under the impression I do not know what I am talking about. I am only relaying the information put out on the net and papers. If I am wrong, then so are the hundreds of thousands of customers Netflix has already lost. Netflix is not losing customers over just one thing, namely the huge price hike, it is the combination of quite a few things. And Netflix hasn't exactly been graceful with the last several announcements its made to the public.

And, to no one in particular:

You don't cut out the customers ability to communicate between themselves on your website, then drop Starz (their main streaming source), and Sony's withdrawn from the streaming altogether I believe, then tell your customers your doing away with DVDs and going totally instant flix. And then tell your customers there is a price hike of 60% after they fully understand the services are dwindling? All that is just fucking stupid to do in that particular order. Then slap them in the face again with a combo apology and that you are also separating streaming and DVD by making them separate companies. WTF kind of dumb shit is that?

The best thing to have done on the price increase would have been to raise it gradually at $2.00 per year. Not 60% in one whack.

The only reason Netflix stock went up in June, was because the dumbass investors thought an increase in prices meant an increase in their wallets. Instead, it had exactly the opposite effect. Now their stock value has plummeted over 50%. CEO Hastings wrongly assumes they will only loose 600,000 more customers. Many think it will be more like 6,000,000 or more.

If they do the game rentals as well as they do the dvd's, then game fly can go away.
