Unions have their uses.

If you need skilled people for work, out back of beyond, unions furnish the people you need. If youre new to town and need a dozen or 100 skilled people, the union can help you out immediately. If you need skilled people for one day one week or one month, unions get the job done for you.

Where unions fuck up is sending out drunks and druggies and assholes. Man! I was on a job site where the contractor came out and stabbed a violent mother fucker to get rid of him. The SOB caused nuthin but trouble and the union looked the other way. When he threatened the contractor with a screwdriver, the contractor buried a knife in the mans chest.

Almost by definition a worker who's been there longer knows more, and likely knows things that other "younger, better" workers don't know simply because they've been there longer. But yeah I know you think that firing people who want raises and hiring on new people is a good way to run a company. And it is as long as you have a society that permits it.

I'm saying that without that line worker (and all the line workers) there wouldn't be a company at all. The only reason your fantasy functions is because we have this wierd combination of too many workers to few employers so if the employees say "If you want a car made come make it yourself" the employer replies "fine," fires them all hires on new people at half the cost of the first batch. Now you've got poor workers and poor unemployed. The poor workers say "Uh boss I can't live on Top Ramen" to which the boss says "fine" fires them all and rehires the now starving first batch at half of that, but they all live together now 16 to a 3 room apartment. But that's awesome cus no one has a right to a job.

If the union gets there way the company will not go bankrupt. Not unless they are a very very stupid union. If the company goes belly up their out of a job the same as if they were fired. Sure they might get lucky and it might TAKE longer but that's the only difference is it might take longer.

What you miss if an employer gets what he wants he'll have slaves working for free. Ultimately that is the goal of every inteligent businessman.

Somewhere in between there is a compromise to be made and history has shown that the guys at the top rarely give a fair share to the guys at the bottom because the guys at the bottom have almost no pull as individuals. Even if you're going to make teh argument that if they have a unique skill they have some pull that's fine. But we STILL need grunts on the assembly line, and cashiers and shelf stockers, truck drivers, and garbage men.
