Curious -- has anyone used the speech recognition stuff in Windows 7? I have a lot of recurring arm issues, tendonitis and the like, and voice recognition would likely be helpful. I'm not in a position to spend a lot, but a search turned up things about it in Windows 7, so I was wondering it if was worth trying.

I tried setting up speech recognition on my Windows 7 laptop, but I guess it doesn't like my accent - I didn't have much success and was tempted to throw the bloody thing out of the window

Hmm, sounds like something fun to experiment with.
<--- loves gadgets and this counts as a gadget.

I will have to experiment. Right now my arms are not happy. I crocheted this totoro for my daughter (see link below).

I am working on one for my son (scroll down on this page). So far I have two ears, a tail and one arm. Oh and the eyes. My arms are tired/fatigued/sore enough that I've punted on cooking. Guess I'd better order the Chinese stuff...

So, anyway, this all led me to checking out the voice recognition stuff. Anything that would help with writing and ease stress on my arms would be welcome.

Hummm, I'm surprised. I'm told that the writers at Lit. are champions at one-handed keying. :D

(No, I haven't tried the speech recognition. I tried the dictation approach years ago, and my mind locked up at all attempts.)

LOL I guess I can keep myself aloof enough that I'm good with two hands. Ahem.

I'm a bit concerned I'll have a similar issue with voice recognition. Sometimes it's hard enough to type, but to say it out loud... ick. Plus I edit as I go along all the time and I'm not sure how that would work. I feel like I may have to train myself to think in a new way.

On the other hand, if it works, I can crochet while writing. :D

PL That's a cute crochet animal. So creative.

Well, I messed with voice recognition, it's fairly easy but do the tutorial so the software learns your speech pattern. Here is some info in this link about it. I think it works better if you used a headset rather than a table mic or the computer's mic. You end up having to speak too loud and repeatedly.

I have not tried word, but the wife has that Dragon practically speaking thing and it sucks. you have to read for over an hour to give it a good sample and if it can;t match a word it sticks random things in there.

I also cannot dictate a story, I either have to type or write it out.

I don't think I woulld ever want to use speech recognition. I type, and often back up and make corrections and changes if I think they are needed. Besides, with so many homophones, I would need to edit with eyes like a hawk once I finished a draft of something.

Thanks, but I can't take credit for a whole lot of creativity there -- I just followed the pattern. :)

As I said, I don't know if I could dictate either, but with the way my arms are or can be, I need an option. I mean, seriously -- my muscles and whatever else in there get tired, sore, it's an effort to get out a gallon of milk or do laundry sometimes. But I can't rest my arms, like one might rest a leg, especially with kids around.

You could "write" a story, and come back later, when you are more up to it, and do a really heavy duty edit. Personally, I consider editing to be drudgery, but necessary, so I wouldn't want to obligate myself to do the level of editing necessary.

Reviewing one of my own stories gives me an opportunity to savor what I was furiously zipping out. And I quite often make the sex scenes more graphic during the review--which is fun.

I have Win7 and haven't used the voice recog feature as yet. I may try it just for fun. :D

Try something simple when you do use it, such as a letter to someone or reading from a book to get the feel of it. Later you may try dictating a draft and edit it when your arms are rested.

"When my arms are rested." I absolutely adore you for your optimism.

I think my editor would quit on me if I sent him something with mixed-up homophones throughout the text. Then again, he might also be happy that I was getting stuff done so quickly.

Wait, do I even have Windows7??? No, I have XP. Hmm.

I tried that voice recognition stuff but it always said it didn't understand Texan, to try an actual language..

It's software already on XP, like Windows 7, you just have to access it differently:

That's a very useful hint; thanks.

Penn,
The one thing about any VR software is that it is adaptive. It therefore takes a good while to get used to an accent and all the other individual nuances that make up your individual voice.

You do, for instance, have to find a way to input Commands as opposed to voice text, but the beast can give you a lot of help. Spelling is another one that needs thought.
IBM did a very good one (but it takes AGES to get used to you [for Heaven's sake, save & back up the critical file]). Once you get used to it, it can be amazingly accurate.

It is well worth trying. It might not work very well for your particular circumstance, but it's great when you get it right. You can even tell the computer what to do.

PS. It will improved your diction !

I've wondered about VR and whether or not it would be faster than typing. I agree with you, saying it out loud is a bit different than writing it. I think my stories would end up very bland.

If you try it, let us know how it goes.

That totoro is the cutest thing EVER!!!

Thanks. :) I"ll post a pic of the one I'm making for my son when it's finished. Then I may try to create my own pattern for the cat bus that's in the same movie. Should be fun.

I will try the VR stuff at some point. However, the hub and I are planning some rearrangements in the house, and my parents just decided to visit. Which means, I'm sure, that my mom won't like our plans. Too bad. My house.

You got that right!
