the intentions were absolutely different-- Califia's work was deliberately realistic, Rice was over the wacky moon on purpose.

Still, some things in that series are more accurate than a lot of BDSM romance that I've come across since. Who was the second of the Princes that beauty is involved with? The lusty switchy dude? The scenes of him in the pony yard, where the guys are just one big rough sex pile-- that's more like gay play parties actually are, in my experience.
