Stoned driving is uncharted territory

Experts say they don't know what level of marijuana impairs a driver, but statistics show that fatal crashes involving drugged drivers have jumped. Law enforcement puts much of the blame on the growth of medical marijuana use.

"It was his green tongue that helped give away Jimmy Candido Flores when police arrived at the fatal accident scene near Chico.

"Flores had run off the road and killed a jogger, Carrie Jean Holliman, a 56-year-old Chico elementary school teacher. California Highway Patrol officers thought he might be impaired and conducted a sobriety examination. Flores' tongue had a green coat typical of heavy marijuana users and a later test showed he had pot, as well as other drugs, in his blood.

"After pleading guilty to manslaughter, Flores, a medical marijuana user, was sentenced in February to 10 years and 8 months in prison.

"Holliman's death and others like it across the nation hint at what experts say is an unrecognized crisis: stoned drivers.

"The most recent assessment by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, based on random roadside checks, found that 16.3% of all drivers nationwide at night were on various legal and illegal impairing drugs, half them high on marijuana.

"In California alone, nearly 1,000 deaths and injuries each year are blamed directly on drugged drivers, according to CHP data, and law enforcement puts much of the blame on the rapid growth of medical marijuana use in the last decade. Fatalities in crashes where drugs were the primary cause and alcohol was not involved jumped 55% over the 10 years ending in 2009.

"Marijuana is a significant and important contributing factor in a growing number of fatal accidents," said Gil Kerlikowske, director of National Drug Control Policy in the White House and former Seattle police chief. "There is no question, not only from the data but from what I have heard in my career as a law enforcement officer."

uimm, what? green tongue? dude, i used to smoke weed like it was oxygen and my tongue never turned fucking green.

I'm sure that many accidents are caused by people driving while praying.

They ought to ban religious radio broadcasts.

I rather deal with a stoned driver than a sober mom, texting, playing with the radio and yelling at her kids.

And I've never even heard of this green tongue thing... it's bullshit. My tongue would be perpetually green.

Green no, but white whit cotton mouth yes. If weed does get legalized around here they do need to find a way to do a sobriety test just like alcohol breathalyser test. THC stays in your system too long and I don't want to be hit with a ticket for a joint I smoked a week ago.

With the high thc strains coming out today I don't want some dude driving after smoking some couch lock weed. Goes for the sativa strain as well, do you really want somebody behind the wheel with his head in the clouds on some purple haired Kush. I think not.

Responsibility people. If you want to be treated like an adult act like one and be responsible and not drive to taco bell stoned to the core. Order pizza instead, they deliver. Now saying that I was guilty of this crime in my younger years and looking back on it I was wrong. Cannot enjoy anymore cause of job though.

I believe that's the true gist of the article: the three branches of government attempting to devise a reliable method(s) to ascertain the level at which marijuana consumption is to be legally considered a dangerous threat to others' individual liberty while driving.

My ex gf and i had our shit turn blue once from eating a bowl of Kaboom cereal, but i have never gotten green tongue smoking weed, and trust me i have smoked a lot in my life time.

Dude that's funny. Used to love that shit. The clown version of Lucky Charms.

Then I heard about Gacy and kind of lost interest.

I agree with all you say there. I have nothing against stoners. Not at all. It someone wants to take a few tokes to relax at the end of the day, then by all means, do so. But its like any other substance or drug, you have to be carefull and take precautions. Be responsible.

I have not smoked a joint in 20 or so years. I used to drink alot. I think alcohol sales declined in Texas when I quit cold turkey. I took all kinds of precautions to avoid DWI. Taxis cabs, giving bartender my keys, calling someone, designated driver, sometimes I just walked to one of the bars close to where I lived, etc..I spent a buttload of money, but it was well worth it.

Bad enough going to jail, but the idea of killing someone in an accident is something I do not think I could live with. Better to wake up with a badass hangover than in jail or the realization I destroyed someone's life.
