Secret Desert Force Set Up by Blackwater’s Founder

By MARK MAZZETTI and EMILY B. HAGER

ABU DHABI, United Arab Emirates — Late one night last November, a plane carrying dozens of Colombian men touched down in this glittering seaside capital. Whisked through customs by an Emirati intelligence officer, the group boarded an unmarked bus and drove roughly 20 miles to a windswept military complex in the desert sand.

The Colombians had entered the United Arab Emirates posing as construction workers. In fact, they were soldiers for a secret American-led mercenary army being built by Erik Prince, the billionaire founder of Blackwater Worldwide, with $529 million from the oil-soaked sheikdom.

Mr. Prince, who resettled here last year after his security business faced mounting legal problems in the United States, was hired by the crown prince of Abu Dhabi to put together an 800-member battalion of foreign troops for the U.A.E., according to former employees on the project, American officials and corporate documents obtained by The New York Times.

The force is intended to conduct special operations missions inside and outside the country, defend oil pipelines and skyscrapers from terrorist attacks and put down internal revolts, the documents show. Such troops could be deployed if the Emirates faced unrest in their crowded labor camps or were challenged by pro-democracy protests like those sweeping the Arab world this year.

The U.A.E.’s rulers, viewing their own military as inadequate, also hope that the troops could blunt the regional aggression of Iran, the country’s biggest foe, the former employees said.

This man must have been born with a quicksilver tongue. He seems to be able to talk anyone into paying him to muck things up and heavy-hand it. I would love to be a fly on the wall in these meetings, it's incredible.

I agree.
"How did you come to live in Abu Dhabi?"
"I'm here fleeing federal murder prosecution to avoid paying 40 million dollars in fines."
"You must be a pretty lousy guy."
"I am, and that's exactly the kind of guy you want managing the secret, multinational mercenary force that I would like to propose to you."
"You have my attention! Is $530 million enough to start with?"

If I was the ruler of the UAE and wanted to keep hosting professional golf tournaments and keep the snow falling inside my indoor ski slopes, I'm not certain I wouldn't do something similar.

The obvious question is why their own military is suspect? That's also the easiest to answer. Do we really need to go there?

So if your butt is on the throne and you have any hope of keeping your Arabian Disneyland safe for all tourists, what would you do?

It's just that Blackwater consistently shows up under the what NOT to do column. He must be known in those echelons as the dirty job man, the who you gonna call man --- but his track record shows it just never ends well.

But maybe you're right and he's just the inevitable shadow of decadence & greed these days. The fitting punishment.

Considering that the Libyan rebels have control of oil money, I expected them to hire mercenaries.

I'm looking at it strictly from the UAE point of view. If you're the head of state in the Arabian peninsula, I'm not sure there IS a what not to do column.

there is NOT one company in teh WORLD that doesnt have some shit against em

MEANINGLESS!

dude is from my old hometown. his family used to own the aptly named prince company. they were actually supposed to be a good employer. it's too bad he's evil.

McDonalds doesnt have a history of homicide

I can't remember the last time Victoria's secret missapropriated firearms

I love the way you go toe-to-toe with this fucking piece of shit by slapping his limp needledick away with facts and he can never step up. Keep at it. :D

They're probably going to kidnap innocent people off the streets, then brutally rape, torture, and murder them for fun.

Blackwater mercenaries also like flying around in helicopters and gunning down unarmed innocents with the side-mounted guns.

These war-crimes-for-fun are always "covered for" by shadowy and mysterious hands in the military and intelligence community.

Blackwater mercenaries are nothing but a bunch of violent, murdering psychopaths whom get their kicks out of torture and killing.

I'd be worried if a mercenary didn't have murder charges and fines against him. I'd think that the fact that he has those and is still operating would be a selling point. No matter how they bill themselves you can't look at a mercenary like you do other businesses.
