Erotica

The Definitions of Erotica & Pornography...


The word "erotica" simply means "love". An ancient Greek word from the God of Love "Eros".

Generally it is meant to describe the arts of literature, photography, film, sculpture and painting which describes anything that is "sexually" stimulating or arousing, and because acts of love are supposed to be "sexual" it has become associated with the acts of "love making" as well as the portrayal of human sensuality and sexuality with high-art aspirations.

So what is the difference between erotica and pornography?

While pornography popularly focuses on unadorned and unemotional lusts and the explicit depiction of sexual acts, erotica tends to define material with a higher emotional content, the development of place, character and story line, or of an overall artistic theme. However, such distinctions are necessarily subjective and may say more about the critic's own tastes on erotic material than the artistic and other attributes of the material itself. In the motion picture sense, softcore pornography (soft porn) is a similar kind of commercial art form that resides in the area between erotica and hardcore pornography, although erotica, as a type of fine art, may also be highly sexually explicit.

The division between erotica and pornography is an aesthetic division, usually dependent on moral philosophy, religious dogma, or personal outlook. At present, many legal jurisdictions maintain laws regulating the availability of expressions deemed pornographic (although that term almost never appears in legal texts), arguably to maintain a level of comfort or safety for a majority of citizens.

From that comment, we can see it is entirely down to the reader/viewer's own interpretation, depending on their own tastes and moral background.

There is no doubt that both pornography and erotica induce the state of "eroticism"...

Eroticism is an "aesthetic" focused on sexual desire, especially the feelings of "anticipation" of sexual activity. It is not only the state of arousal and anticipation, but also the attempt through whatever means of representation to incite those feelings.

The word "eroticism" is derived from the name of the Greek god of love, Eros. It is conceived as sensual love or the human sex drive (libido). Philosophers and theologians discern three kinds of love:

(1)eros (erotic desiring)
(2)philia (friendship)
(3)agape (self-sacrificing love)

Of the three, eros it considered the most egocentric, focusing on care for the self.

Ancient Greek philosophy’s overturning of mythology defines in many ways our understanding of the heightened aesthetic sense in eroticism and the question of sexuality. Eros was after all the primordial god of unhinged sexual desire in addition to homoeroticism. In the Platonic ordered system of ideal forms, eros corresponds to the subject's yearning for ideal beauty and finality.

It is the harmonious unification not only between bodies, but between knowledge and pleasure. This corresponds to attaining orgasm in erotic love-making. The French philosopher Georges Bataille believed eroticism was a movement towards the limits of our own subjectivity and humanity - a transgression that dissolves the rational world but is always transitory.

Yet an objection to eros and erotic representation which is seen as pornography is that it fosters a subject/object relationship in which the object of desire is mere projection of the needs of desiring subject. Love as eros is considered more base than philia (friendship) or agape (self-sacrificing love). But erotic engagement paradoxically individuates and de-individuates the desirer.

It isn't easy to define a "clear border" between the two. Sometimes the two subjects will inevitably clash with each other, promoting argument as to which is either one or the other.

So it seems one has to lay down some ground rules that many can find easy to understand and follow. The first being the "subjective material"... what counts as erotic material and pornographic material?

First let us look at the history that created this "interchangeable" definition between Porn and Erotica...

The concept of pornography as understood today did not exist until the Victorian era. Its current definition was added in the 1860s, replacing the older one meaning writings about prostitutes. In its original meaning, pornography was literally "writing about prostitutes", from the classical Greek. It started as a euphemism and literally meant '(something) sold'. It is related to the Greek meaning "I sell". It derived from a Greek term for men who chronicled the well-known "skilled prostitutes" of ancient Greece.

In more modern times, the term was adopted by social scientists to describe the work of men like Nicholas Restif and William Acton, who in the 18th and 19th centuries published treatises studying prostitution and proposing to regulate it. It first appears in an English medical dictionary in 1857 defined as "A description of prostitutes or of prostitution, as a matter of public hygiene." Within 5 years though, the second, obscene definition appeared in Webster's Dictionary. "Licentious painting or literature; especially, the painting anciently employed to decorate the walls of rooms devoted to bacchanalian orgies."

The term kept its first, neutral meaning in the Oxford English Dictionary until 1905. The term now refers to sexually explicit material of all kinds, particularly that which is prohibited, regulated or condemned by figures of authority.

Euphemisms replacing the word "pornographic" with the word "adult" (e.g. adult film, adult video and adult bookstore) are generally preferred within the industry producing and distributing these works, namely the Adult Entertainment Industry. Pornography can also be contrasted with ribaldry, which uses sexual titillation in the service of comedy. The definition of pornography is highly subjective, with generally accepted works of art such as Michelangelo's David being considered pornographic by some people. In a sense therefore, the definition of pornography is as much (or more) to do with the viewer's motive and response, as with the actual material, content or creator's intention.

A secondary distinction is sometimes made between softcore pornography and hardcore pornography. Softcore pornography generally includes materials that feature nudity, sexually suggestive scenes, and simulated sex, while hardcore or X-rated pornography contains close-ups of aroused genitalia and sexual activities including penetration.

Within the industry itself, informal classification breaks down even further. The differing legal definitions and standards in different countries and regions leads producers to shoot and edit different versions of adult films for release to different markets. The internal rating decision is primarily made by considering whether the film depicts erect penises, close-up shots of genitals and penetration, types of penetration, and the presence or lack of a visible, external ejaculation. Some adult films are edited into an R-rated version suitable for release on late-night cable television, a softcore version designed for release on a mainstream adult cable channel (e.g., the Playboy channel), and an explicit, hardcore version designed for sale in adult film stores.

In some American jurisdictions the depiction of urination or defecation contributes to the conclusion that a particular image is pornographic (see e.g. Arizona Criminal Code, 9f, 11, in combination with Arizona Criminal Code, A2, and for Utah, 8h).

Another term that is often confused with "pornography" is obscenity, a legal term used in many US states meaning artistic material (any media, any genre) that has no reasonable real artistic merit and appeals to the "prurient interest" and patently offends reasonable prudent people in the community.

Arizona prosecuted distributors of a pornographic film called Taboo American Style in 1989 on the grounds that it was not merely pornographic but obscene, which would be a crime to distribute under Arizona law. Most of what has been considered obscene in the USA has been pornography, thus the terms are often confused.

From this I think we can guess that actual "imagery" (pictures) of erotic scenes has been classed as mainly pornographic, and so leaving written depictions and descriptions as mainly "erotica" today.

History of Erotic Depictions: When large scale excavations of Pompeii were undertaken in the 1860s, much of the "erotic art" of the Romans came to light, shocking the Victorians who saw themselves as the intellectual heirs of the Roman Empire.

They did not know what to do with the frank depictions of sexuality, and endeavored to hide them away from everyone but upper class scholars. The movable objects were locked away in the Secret Museum in Naples, Italy and what couldn't be removed was covered and cordoned off as to "not corrupt the sensibilities of women, children and the working class".

Soon after, England’s and the world's "first laws" criminalizing pornography was enacted in the Obscene Publications Act of 1857.

The Victorian attitude that pornography was for a select few can be seen in the wording of the Hicklin test stemming from a court case in 1868 where it asks, "whether the tendency of the matter charged as obscenity is to deprave and corrupt those whose minds are open to such immoral influences." Despite their repression, depictions of erotic imagery are common throughout history, and remain so.

But can we use this as a guide?

So far everything hinges on one thing... the level of "obscenity" in description and behaviour.


Obscene Literature...

Many people find erotica and pornography "obscene", meaning that they are offended by its "graphic content"...

Even literature can be described as "graphic" once read clearly and understood. Only literature creates images in the readers own mind depending on the clarity of the descriptive text and interpretation. However, pictures, sculptures and paintings are visual in every sense. They are "in your face" material, letting the viewer see exactly what is happening, content wise.

So, is literature excludable from being obscene?

The reader does not have to read the literature knowing its contents. In a way it is therefore "latent obscenity" regarding either erotica or pornography.

The term obscenity is most often used in a legal context to describe expressions (words, images, actions) that offend the prevalent sexual morality of the time.

Despite its long formal and informal use with a sexual connotation, the word still retains the meanings of "inspiring disgust" and even "inauspicious; ill-omened", as in such uses as "obscene profits", "the obscenity of war", and the like. It can simply be used to mean profanity, or it can mean anything that is taboo, indecent, abhorrent, or disgusting.

The definition of obscenity differs from culture to culture, between communities within a single culture, and also between individuals within those communities. Many cultures have produced laws to define what is considered to be obscene, and censorship is often used to try to suppress or control materials that are obscene under these definitions, usually including, but not limited to pornographic material. Because the concept of obscenity is often ill-defined, it can be used as a political tool to try to restrict freedom of expression. Thus, the definition of obscenity can be a civil liberties issue.

In the past many novels where found to be obscene and consequently banned. One in particular in recent history was Lady Chatterley's Lover by D. H. Lawrence. It was writen in 1928 and published privately in Italy. Lawrences' original title was going to be called "Tenderness", but he changed his mind in favour of the reader...

The story is said to have originated from events in Lawrence's own unhappy domestic life, and he took inspiration for the settings of the book from Ilkeston in Derbyshire where he lived for a while.

The story concerns a young married woman, Constance, Lady Chatterley, whose upper-class husband has been paralyzed and rendered impotent. Her sexual frustration leads her into an affair with the gamekeeper, Oliver Mellors. The novel closes with Constance and Mellors expecting a child. They are physically separated from one another, pending successful divorce suits with their respective spouses, and are hopeful of being able to build a life together one day...

Basically a romantic love story with lots of descriptive "erotic" scenes and "language". It is hard to say what actually got the novel banned. Either the language, descriptions of erotica or moral content. There was one particular "scene" which caused controversy. The British publishers were taken to trial in 1960 under the Obscene Publications Act of 1959...

In Chapter 15, there is a passage in which Mellors approaches Lady Chatterley from behind (quote) "and short and sharp, he took her, short and sharp and finished, like an animal." (unquote).

Even the normally explicit Lawrence does not spell out whether this was vaginal or anal sex, but some events and language in the scene that follows suggest the latter. At the time, even the mention of anal sex was so highly taboo that the very existence of the practice was unknown to many people. There is no way to know how the prosecution interpreted that passage, and whether the outcome might have been different had Lawrence been explicit.

The 1959 act, had made it possible for publishers to escape conviction if they could show that a work was of literary merit. One of the objections was for the frequent use of the word "fuck" and its derivatives.

Various academic critics, including E. M. Forster, Helen Gardner and Raymond Williams, were called as witnesses, and the verdict, delivered on November 2, 1960, was not guilty.

This resulted in a far greater degree of freedom for publishing explicit material in the UK.

In 2006, the trial was dramatised by BBC 4 as The Chatterley Affair.

Home Movies...

Since the availability of video cameras and then webcams, many people, mostly partnered couples have tried to produce their own "private" pornographic movies. These movies became more and more adventurous, inviting very close friends and lovers to join in.

At first they remained private, or atleast at most, distributed amongst close and trusted "friends" of those taking part. A kind of "group sex" fraternity was created based on these movies and soon amateur "pornographers" began to realise their financial potential and many used the internet and other organisations to distribute them.

Today, live sex can be seen using webcams which in a way beats the "dogging" groups. By watching live sex performed by couples on the internet meant that there was no need to go to planned "scenes" or "orgies"... it was there in the home, brought to them on their PC's and laptops with a greater audience.

This increases the fun and erotic pleasure of the "exhibitionsts" and is widely becoming popular.

But, not everyone found their home movies fun to share...atleast, not at first...

Truly amateur pornography includes pornographic home movies and photographs shot by couples or individuals for their private entertainment, as well as amateur movies created for noncommercial distribution among friends. Several celebrities, most notably Pamela Anderson and Tommy Lee, have seen their pornographic home movies illegally distributed commercially.

A pornographic home video of Anderson and Tommy Lee was stolen from their home, and made a huge stir on the Internet. Anderson sued the company, the Internet Entertainment Group, that was distributing the video. Ultimately the courts awarded Anderson and Lee $1.5 million plus attorney fees for their share of the profits.

Home movies may additionally be distributed commercially; for example, a group may throw a sex party mainly for the fun of it and agree to sell documentary footage of the events...

As the Internet created easy access and distribution for pornography, producers realized that they could earn easy money as users were paying as much for cheap, shoddy work as they were for high quality pornography. But as the Web porn industry matured, the majority of consumers began to demand a certain degree of production quality to the films and videos on offer.

My partner and I have made over 9 hours of home movies for our very own private viewing. I have written a series of stories documenting the production of these movies. They were straight "pornography" at first with very little "acted out" erotic content, just straight love making scenes in various positions and styles.

Then we decided to add a kind of "play" to them, almost scripted to every detail which then added an "erotic" content to them rather than just straight porn, including adding a third person to join us.


Glam erotica...

Glamour photography began in the 1920's as an alternative to fashion, with emphasis on the models themselves and their erotic aesthetic.

Originally glam photography was introduced by Ruth Harriet Louise, to popularise celebrities and then during the 1940's glam photography added another dimension... that of the "pin-up" introducing the erotic element to glamour artwork.

Soon glamour photography moved towards an ever increasing erotic image and the pin-ups were given a showcase of their own, making adult magazines such as Playboy, Penthouse, Men Only and Mayfair very popular as "top shelf journals". By the 1970's even popular UK newspapers used the "topless model" image as the famous "page three girl".

Stephanie Rahn was a famous topless model of the 1970s. She was twenty years old when she did her first shot as the first ever topless "page three girl" for The Sun newspaper on November 17, 1970.

The Page Three girl was introduced in 1969 when UK newspaper, The Sun was re-launched. The Page Three girl was topless for the first time, when editor Larry Lamb unveiled the change whilst the owner, Rupert Murdoch was out of the country. The change was credited for a subsequent increase in sales, which rose 40% to 2.1 million copies within a year. The public loved it in the majority, although there was some obvious criticism.

Once again, like Lady Chatterley, this move changed the public view of erotica and again in the UK as the testing ground for the USA and europe, although Holland had its own ideas of making erotica popular throughout the modern world.

It was then the term "softcore" as in soft core porn came into use. The Glam Mags soon became softcore journals, publishing not only erotic photographs but literature in the form of short stories, jokes and readers confessions. Soon the internet followed this "glam" or "softcore" trend and like the hard copy journals, moved very quickly into "hardcore" material.

The idea of newspapers publishing "softcore" pictures was somewhat dampened from harsh criticism from the feminists when Beverley Goodway became The Sun newspaper's official glam photographer. She was a woman, photographing other semi naked women. She saw the "artistic merit" in visual fem erotica and soon attitudes began to change in favour and a majority of femists began to support it.

Still one-sided though... it was rare to see a "page three guy" and still is today

Mayfair is a British adult magazine for men. Founded in 1965, it was designed as a response to U.S. magazines such as Playboy and Penthouse, which had recently launched in the UK. Today it tends to focus on established models mostly with a large-breasted figure.

Paul Raymond is the alias of Geoffrey Anthony Quinn, who was born on 15th November 1925 in Liverpool, England and raised by his mother in Glossop.

He is an English pornographer, property developer and owner of the Raymond Revuebar strip club and several major English erotic magazines such as Razzle and Mayfair. He regularly appears on UK rich lists and is a widely believed to be a billionaire.

Raymond started out by opening the Revuebar in 1957, which continues to the present day. Paul Raynond's struggle with UK obscenity laws were to match those with the rest of Europe, in particular Holland, which have the most "open" laws regarding obscenity in the world second to Japan. And it was these laws which often get raised in disputes, not with publications, but regarding "live sex shows" and striptease...

So, where and when did it all begin?...

The ancient art of the striptease traces its origins in the Sumerian tablets, on which were written the myth of the descent of the goddess Inanna into Hell to retrieve her lover Damouz. At each of the seven gates, she removed a veil and a jewel. As long as she remained in hell, the earth was barren. When she returned, fecundity abounded. Her dance lived on as the famous Dance of the Seven Veils of Salome, who danced for King Herod in the New Testament. Many forms of the "strip-tease" made their way throughout Sumeria, Mesopotamia, into Asia and west into the near east and southern Europe, via the Gypsies...



In South India, the dance evolved through the Devadasi temple and court dancers.

In the nineteenth century, French colonists in North Africa and Egypt "discovered" and seized upon the dances of the Ghawazee, especially a courtesan dancer known as Kuchuk Hanem, and exoticized the image of the nonwestern woman as one who would disrobe as part of a dance performance. It is likely that the women performing these dances did not do so in an indigenous context, but rather, responded to the commercial climate for this type of entertainment.

American striptease nurtured its roots in carnivals and Burlesque theatres. The art and business enjoyed prosperity as the United States economy grew out of the depression of the 1930's through the fifties. In the sixties and seventies, with changing cultural expressions of sexuality, it declined in profitability and status. In the eighties and technology boom of the nineties, those in the profession enjoyed better acceptance and better working conditions.

In the late 19th century something called Burlesque made the "dance" art of striptease more erotic. This made it even more popular and even profitable as an "entertainment" business, bringing about the development of clubs and bars centred on the art itself... and slowly striptease became publicly respectable... to a certain extent.

The origin of striptease as we know it came into an "act" in 1890s Paris and developed slowly from there.

Striptease enjoyed a revival with the advent of burlesque theatre, with famous strippers such as Gypsy Rose Lee and in 1940, humorist H. L. Mencken coined the term ecdysiast as a euphemism for strippers; it derives from the Greek ekdusis meaning "to molt."... or strip.

In the latter 1990s a number of performers and dance groups have emerged to create New Burlesque, a revival of the classic burlesque of the early half of the twentieth century. New Burlesque focuses on dancing, costumes and entertainment (which may include comedy and singing) and generally eschews full nudity or toplessness. Some burlesquers of the past have become instructors and mentors to New Burlesque performers such as Velvet Hammer and the Pontani Sisters. The pop group Pussycat Dolls began as a New Burlesque troupe.

In burlesque, performers, usually female, often create elaborate sets with lush, colorful costumes, mood-appropriate music, and dramatic lighting, and may even include novelty acts, such as fire-breathing or demonstrations of unusual flexibility, to enhance the impact of their performance...some even sing and play "musical" instruments...

Today... many erotic actresses and actors in the US make a main living from their earnings taking part in personal appearances as featured exotic dancers, in much the same way that many musicians make their main living from live performance, with their recordings serving as advertising. Many in the striptease industry appear in pornographic movies or magazines to be paid more for appearing at stripclubs as "feature dancers" because they are porn stars, which clubs advertise to bring in a bigger paying audience. The more famous the porn star, the more the exotic dancer will be paid by the stripclub to perform at their club.

And what about the guys? ...

Until the 1970s, strippers were almost invariably female, performing to male audiences. Since then, male strippers, performing to female audiences, have also become common. Male and female strippers also perform for gay and lesbian audiences respectively, as well as for both sexes in pansexual contexts. Before the 1970s dancers of both genders appeared largely in underground clubs or as part of a theatre experience, but the practice eventually became common enough on its own.

Visits by women to clubs featuring male strippers, usually as a group for an activity such as a bachelorette party, have now become part of mainstream culture in Western countries. Unlike the enforced sedate atmosphere at clubs featuring female exotic dancers for male audiences, the female audience for male strippers is very vocal, rowdy, and even aggressive. In cities such as Washington, D.C. where full nudity is allowed, the male strippers at gay venues stand on the bar or stage and masturbate to maintain erection, allowing the customers to also masturbate or ejaculate them for tips.
