NRA and Florida gag pediatricians: no more firearm safety advice for parents

Damn, that's cold.

And creepy.

Thank you for that uplifting insight.

Americans like their guns. We like our guns so much we put a compound sentence in our Constitution which allows us to fight off any attempt to limit our possession of them. The first part of the sentence explains why the second part of the sentence was included. In later years, we pretended the first part did not exist. This allows us to keep loaded guns on the coffee table. We tell our toddlers not to touch the gun and all is well.

Even though everything I have stated is true, don't expect it to make sense.

the data I've seen has been fairly consistent for many years now...and is the same whether the child lives in an urban setting or rural. Roughly, one child dies every single day from an accidental gunshot (defined as a child playing with a gun and killing themself). That is sad.

Good for the legislature and the governor. Whether there is a firearm in a home or not is NONE of the doctors business. Further, unless the doctor has attended some special course they are in NO position to opine on anything related to firearms.

What is missing is the fact that the only reason a doctor would even know if there was a firearm in the house or not would be to ask. And once asking note such in the patients record. And that is exactly what was taking place. None of their damn business.

This is not sad if you are a funeral director.

The real problem is when children play with a gun, there is usually only one gun. How can any child defend themselves if they are the one without a gun?

Florida pediatricians should be allowed to ask parents if there are a sufficient number of guns to go around, with a reasonable allowance for neighborhood children.

I don't know why the NRA is so worried about Doctors. Every Dr. I know has an arsenal in his house.

It could lead to smaller households.

Yes, but that might lead to fewer gun purchases.

I fail to see how restricting opinion is somehow smaller government. If this was someone on the left pulling something along these lines, the right would be screaming "socialism", "big brother", and "fascism" for the next 5 years.

As to the right to voicing opinion (due to not being an expert), i'm curious; should only teachers and principals be allowed to have an opinion on education? How much schooling or experience should be required before they can share that opinion with the general populace?

Anytime gun purchases start to lag, expect a new "gun control" rumor to spur sales.

Never fails.

I'm sort of of four minds about it. Do we need a law governing what a doc can and can't talk to patients about?

I say let the docs talk about whatever they want, and patients can ignore them in the time honored fashion.
Doctors don't even have time to listen to what their patients have to tell them.

A doctor that wastes any of my alloted five minutes to give me a fucking safety lecture is getting punched in the face.

Why do Pediatricians need to provide advice on gun safety? If I want gun safety advice, I'll ask a gun safety expert. After all, it's my gun, my kid, and my house.

We'll just add the gun safety advice to the list of things Doctors cannot talk about: like a patent's legal status.

Holy moly... 365 deaths per year??

That's three times the number killed by bees, dogs, horses, and spiders combined!

Harumph! Harumph!

I would imagine that anyone that owned a gun they didn't like would probably sell it.

The same trend can be observed with cars, boats, televisions, and table saws.

Excellent observation. If cars, televisions and table saws had been around in 1790, they would probably enjoy Constitutional protection as well. There were boats back then. There is no accounting for why the government can make laws infringing on the people's right to sail.

the question is when does the knowledge of guns in the home get back to the insurer and lead to increased rates and even loss of insurance.
Probably when we transition to single payer... Doctors paid by the same guy telling him to ask the question and turn over the answers. What other info do you want to keep from your doctor? Do you have any transfats in the home?

Roughly five children die every single day from injuries sustained in automobile accidents. Where's the moral outrage against the lack of safe driving and safe vehicles?

This isn't about child safety. It's about playing politics.

based on thi link, you'd think those in favor of Docs discussing gun safety would also be in favor of discussing safety for all these potential causes of death that cause more deaths than guns:

Cause deaths %
Unintentional Injury 1176 38.97%
* Mohor Vehicle Traffic 621 20.58%
* Drowning 159 5.27%
* Fire/burn 153 5.07%
* Suffocation 40 1.33%
* Other Land Transport 33 1.09%
* Pedestrian, Other 27 0.89%
* Struck by or Against 20 0.66%
* Unspecified 20 0.66%
* Fall 18 0.60%
* Other Spec., classifiable 17 0.56%
* Poisoning 15 0.50%

* Firearm 14 0.46%
* Other Transport 12 0.40%
* Other Spec., NEC 8 0.27%
* Natural/ Environment 7 0.23%
* Machinery 6 0.20%
* Pedal cyclist, Other 4 0.13%
* Cut/pierce 2 0.07%

Oh wait, then the Docs won;t have time to do Doctoring.

So you're saying Americans liked their guns more than they liked their boats?
