Hate Crime: Young Transgender Woman Beaten Into Seizure At McDonald’s

A young transgender woman who was in a Baltimore, Maryland area McDonald’s was beaten by two teenagers on Monday, April 18, as she was trying to go to the restroom. As the incident began, a McDonald’s employee filmed the violent attack, which you can see below, and later posted the video on YouTube and reportedly to his Facebook page. The video shows McDonald’s employees did nothing to stop the attack, and actually laughing. The McDonald’s manager did little more than yell, “Stop!” Only one customer, a middle-aged woman — who subsequently also got pushed and kicked — made any attempt to aid the young transgender woman.

“She having a seizure, yo. … Police on their way. Y’all better get out of here,” an unidentified man can be heard saying.

The three-minute video depicts the 22-year old transgender woman, being kicked in the head repeatedly, and dragged across the floor by the two teenaged assailants. Once the attack stops, the woman rests against the wall, only to be kicked again. Then, as her attackers appear to be leaving, they return and continue the assault, literally dragging her from the back of the restaurant almost all the way to the front door. She has a seizure and convulsions as the beating continues.

“She having a seizure, yo. … Police on their way. Y’all better get out of here,” an unidentified man can be heard saying.

“The police report identifies the victim as 22-year-old Chrissy Lee Polis, who appears identical to Christopher Lee Polis,” writes The Smoking Gun.

“On average, a transgender person is murdered every month in the United States. This violence is intolerable,” says Michael Silverman, Executive Director of the Transgender Legal Defense and Education Fund.

“This latest attack highlights the extraordinary level of violence and brutality that transgender people face in their everyday lives,” Michael Silverman, Executive Director of the Transgender Legal Defense and Education Fund told The New Civil Rights Movement. “We call upon the authorities to fully investigate this attack as a hate crime, and hope that the victim will receive some measure of justice. On average, a transgender person is murdered every month in the United States. This violence is intolerable. We all must redouble our efforts to stop hate-motivated violence directed at transgender people.”

Baltimore law enforcement authorities have yet to state what charges will be brought against the two teenagers who were arrested in relation to this crime. It is not known if it will be prosecuted as a hate crime, although Equality Maryland has demanded state Attorney General Douglas Gansler investigate the case as a hate crime.

Exactly one week before this hate crime beating, the Maryland Senate sent Maryland citizens a strong message when it effectively killed the Gender Identity Non-Discrimination Bill.

“No person ever deserves to be a victim of violence regardless of their gender identity or presentation. We encourage the State’s Attorney General to investigate this as a gate crime based on gender identity. We are encouraged that McDonald’s is working with local police to investigate this incident, and hope that the company will follow-up with appropriate disciplinary action against any employees involved,” Equality Maryland said in a statement.

Maryland’s Hate Crimes Penalties Act “ensures that violent hate crimes against LGBT community members will be investigated and prosecuted as hate crimes,” according to the National Center for Transgender Equality.

“We are shocked by the video from a Baltimore franchised restaurant showing an assault. This incident is unacceptable, disturbing and troubling,” McDonald’s said in a statement posted on its website. “Nothing is more important than the safety of our customers and employees in our restaurants. We are working with the franchisee and the local authorities to investigate this matter.”

Exactly one week before the hate crime beating, the Maryland Senate effectively killed the Gender Identity Non-Discrimination Bill, also known as HB 235, which would have protected transgender people in housing, banking, and employment. While the bill would have had no direct impact on this incident, the Maryland Senate sent Maryland citizens a strong message by killing the bill.

“Nearly everyone in this video is a criminal or an accessory to a crime,” writes Pajamas Media.

Change.org has a petition you can sign, “Demand that the employees on duty at McDonald’s be held responsible in the beating of a trans woman.”

I can only say, I am NEVER going to eat at Mcdick again, cause this is just mentally fucked up. And it is no wonder I do not eat at BurgerKing either ever again, when the personnel attacked a gay couple.

The fact that it was McDonalds has nothing to do with it. If you don't want to eat there, there are a million reasons not to, so go for it. But it has nothing to do with this. It's more about the area (Rosedale, MD - not super nice, I've been there) and the employees themselves. It's not like some cases where corporate tells them not to get involved for their own safety - that would be questionable. In this case, though, it was the employees' own decision.

As for what happened, it apparently had nothing to do with the girl being transgender. Reportedly her attackers didn't know it until after they went for her, although someone can be heard saying "that's a man!" on the video. It's a terrible crime, but it's not a hate crime under the law.

The owner of a Baltimore-area McDonald’s has fired an employee who videotaped the beating of a transgender customer on April 18. More than half a million people viewed the violent attack on You Tube and other sites.

“My first and foremost concern is with the victim,” McDonald’s franchise owner Mitchell McPherson said in a statement released April 23. “I'm as shocked and disturbed by this assault as anyone would be. The behavior displayed in the video is unfathomable and reprehensible.”

McPherson said disciplinary action might be taken against other restaurant employees as well.

The employee, Vernon Hackett, can be heard laughing along with other witnesses during the video, which also documents their failure to offer assistance as two women repeatedly kick and punch the victim in the head. When the victim appears to have a seizure after a strong blow to the head, a man’s voice warns the assailants they’d better clear out because police are on the way.

The two attackers were apparently enraged when Chrissy Lee Polis, 22, used the restaurant’s women’s room. Baltimore County police have charged a 14-year-old girl as a juvenile and an 18-year-old woman as an adult in the attack.

Equality Maryland has called on the state’s attorney general to investigate the case as a hate crime.

“It does appear that the victim was a transgender woman, and she was brutalized while people stood by and watched,” a member of Equality Maryland’s board said. “There’s no excuse for that violence under any circumstances, but we would encourage police to investigate as a hate crime.”

Uhuh. It's of course a shame she was attacked so violently, but because she happens to be a transsexual, everyone puts the attack on that fact, not knowing the real circumstances.

That's what I was trying to say originally. When I commented before, the dispute had something to do with "stay away from my man" as she entered the women's restroom. Now it supposedly has to do with the use of the women's restroom itself. If that's the case, then sure it's a hate crime. But if it's a "stay away from my man" thing, then it's not.

DarkBee, I am not a troll. I am just sick and tired of being attacked by the one and only person who likes to call me xenophobic and a racist. So I begin replying to her in Danish, and there are no curse words in my replies to it. Hell even gramtrans has problems translating Danish and or for that matter babble fish. But one program that will go into bugger all about Danish to English is Babylon. That is one piece of horrendous software, and here we are talking about some of the most recent revisions of that particular program.

Actually, I found that Google does an excellent job with Danish, at least Danish-to-English. There was only one word of yours that it left untranslated, and it said møg = dung (I assume it is more like shit), but it was entirely understandable.

I use it for Japanese 99% of the time, and it really IS awful with Japanese.

But the point is this, I basically proved that I can speak nice and dandy, but even the snobs can be using words, that has the exact same meaning as the worst of it. Møg is not considered a bad word at all, actually it is a word if you say that as a child in school. You will not be reprimanded if you are in a private or normal school.

Sikke noget møg = "what a load of (very soft meaning) crap".
