I mean that, seriously. If you're looking for sexy photos this is the wrong thread.

Here's the deal: I want to lose weight and look better. I have little motivation to. So, every Saturday I will post the following:
  • Two pictures, a front and a side view
  • My weight
  • Goals completed the previous week
  • New goals for the next week

My overall goal is to lose 35 pounds by the end of the year and to be in overall better shape.

Welcome to week one.

Weight: 220 lbs.
Last week's goals: None
Next week's goals:
  • Stretch every morning when I wake up.
  • Three sets, 10 reps, with 7.5 lb. dumbells Monday, Wednesday, Friday
  • Burn (according to my elliptical) 300 Calories on Sunday, Tuesday, Thursday

Side notes: I need to set Photo Booth not to flip pictures. All comments are welcome, including you calling me fat, so long as they are honest.

an' that.

good luck though. i wish you well in your endeavour. and i might even follow along for the grin. :)

Ahem. Huge edit: Misread ya! I don't know how I missed the entire "Good luck" line!? Thanks!

This is a story of my quest to become a more attractive man. This subforum is for rating pictures of amateurs. I mean, if enough people think this thread is worthless I'll shove off, but if people like you don't troll me and no one else wants to post in it it'll only pop to the top page once a week when I update it and quickly subside beneath the waves of pretty ladies with their clothes off. So, basically, you sabotaged your own effort by posting here, both by giving my thread a bump and eliciting a response from me, which would act as a second bump.

OK, i'll say it again ... slowly.

good luck though. i wish you well in your endeavour. and i might even follow along for the grin. :)

... notice the smiley face? clue. jesus, some people. :D

Hello new person with the Banana Republics......... I am here to wish your

thread the best of luck and to hump Geronimos leg. He's my lovah.

I wish you the best of luck with your plan. Since we are already 13 weeks into our new year, that leaves you 39 weeks to take off 35 pounds which is about 1 lb per week.

Very reasonable goals.

I have also been doing the diet/exercise thingy. I have lost 25 lbs and have cut out all processed flour and processed sugar. Working out 6 days per week with a combination of weight training, biking, ski machine and long walks around town (Brooklyn).

If you can cut or burn 500 calories per day x 7 days per week = 3500 calories = 1 pound of weight loss per week.

Good luck, buddy. You can do it. The main thing is consistency. Even if you miss a workout here or there, or you eat something you think you shouldn't... just get right back on the horse. Progress is measured by moving forward, and if you take two steps forward, and slip one step back, you're still ahead of the game.

You're going to need some heavier weights though, dude. Seriously...I don't even let my female clients lift shit that light.

Forget the calorie counter on the elliptical. They're wrong. Period. Figure for every mile you travel, you'll burn about 100 calories.

Diet is the main thing. What are you doing for that?

Wow, getting responses faster than I honestly expected. Thanks for the support, ladies!

@Denny: I'm starting so light because they're the lightest I have and the first week is so I can get into the consistency of it rather than giving up because I'm sore or it feels too rough. (Wow, totally didn't intend a double entendre there.)

I'm surprised that you say the calorie counter on an elliptical can be wrong? I mean, it should be able to directly measure my power output and thus calculate energy expenditure, no? I mean, my elliptical lets me set resistance with wattage.

I wasn't really planning on overtly changing my diet. I don't cook often, if ever, and have always had terrible eating habits. Do you have any suggestions on how to change my diet without totally demoralizing me?

if i may interject at this point. :)

ref diet. eat. eat three meals a day. there are myriad plans, diets, etc. out there, but eating a simple breakfast - porridge, fruit or whatever, light lunch, and an evening meal will work.

the complexity can be figured out by a pro - mebbe denny if he's the guru. :)

I've seen some cardio machines get close, but every elliptical I've been on has been wildly inaccurate. They all use some type of formula that guesstimates calorie burn, but it's usually wrong.

Curious...what does your exercise routine consist of? What exercises are you going to be doing, in what order, how many sets, etc?

In the beginning, you probably don't have to change much in your diet. Simply cutting out sweets and soda and stuff like that can have a huge impact. As you progress, I'd suggest getting a digital food scale ($19 at Wally World), and start tracking your food intake on fitday.com. You need to know how many calories your taking in. No need to get all "diety" and try to eat things you don't enjoy. Focus on lean meats, veggies, and fruits for your meals. If your calories are where they need to be, and you're getting enough protein and essential fatty acids, you can eat whatever you want to to make up those calories.

One way of setting your daily calories is to take the weight you want to be, multiply it by 15 (assuming no metabolic issues), then subtract 500-750 calories from that number. For you, that would come to 2000-2250. I think that's a good starting number for you. Give it a couple of weeks, and see how it goes, then adjust if necessary.

I agree. People try to make it too hard, and tell you that you have to eat multiple small meals and can't eat carbs or whatever. It doesn't have to be that way. If calories are where they need to be, you'll lose weight.

Yeah the calorie counters are never right. The machine does not know if the person using it is 200 lbs lean or fat, or even male or female for the most part.

But what I did find that useful for though was simply to keep track of output.
Use it to set realistic goals of what you do for the day.

Denny is bang on with the comment about the light weights though...if you worked out before you will be surprised by how quickly it will return. Muscle memory.

Low carb diets work like a charm if I have to get ready for anything with a time schedule. Also the smaller more frequent meals of quality whole foods.

Good luck man...I am rooting for ya and will be watching for sure! You can do it!

respeck. :) i was brought up on old school methods. running up and down hills until my eyes bled. these days it's way more scientific, and easier on the knees. ;)

Thanks for all the input, guys. I already don't eat sweets or drink (much) soda. (My soda intake has been ticking up since I changed jobs to where they provide free Dew. Sweet, addictive Dew...)

Like I said, I want to get the habits down before pushing myself -- I've tried going whole hog before and always give up quickly because I'm sore or bored or running late for work.

I'll keep you all updated on the food situation and try to figure out reasonable goals for it for next week.

I douse my soda jones in Coke Zero. It's the only diet soda I can handle.

little crystal light packets are pretty good too....and you can take them to the gym and everyone will think its a sports drink hahaha

Good luck!
I've never worried about my weight myself but I've truly been trying to limit my intake of shit lately because my diet often makes me really lethargic and I don't drink enough water.
So I can sympathize :p.

I hope you reach all your goals!

So I just opened a fortune cookie that was lying on my desk: "Present your best ideas today to an eager and welcoming audience."

I like this turn of events.

We have a cross trainer that you input everything in to, weight etc.....I'm sure it's still wrong though :D
