It's the weirdest thing tonight. You can see the whole thing and there is a little sliver of bright on the bottom. I suppose there is a special name for it, but it's wicked cool.

Good observing! That's commonly called a young moon.

The moon's age is the amount of time that's passed since it was new. People try to spot as young a moon as possible because it's a challenge and looks fabulous.
Any observation of a moon less than 20 hours old is exceptional. To give you an idea of how difficult that is, tonight's moon is about 32 hours old (if I did my math right, which would also be exceptional). Here's more about it.

wow, Owl! Thanks for posting that link. I knew I had seen something special and knew there would be a name for it. How cool it was! It was raining here the night of the 4th, so I never would have seen it. I'm so glad that I got a chance to see it on the 5th. It was just amazing! You've probably figured out that I'm in North America from what I posted. I really hope that others stopped to take a look at it, too. Thanks, again.
