I heard about this out of the corner of my ear, so maybe it's just a rumor. The government has contracted with the internet software giants to produce software that would allow one person to assume and manage ten fake profiles on sites such as this one and Facebook and Twitter.

The software would allow someone to get past any deny function and get on to your friends list. On a site like this one, someone could have ten alts, and then each alt could have ten alts apiece, ad infinitum.

The diabolical purpose of this software is to inject a fake majority opinion into social networking sites. It works with blogs, too. One blogger could become ten bloggers, and each blog...Jesus H Christ! It's mind blogging, when you think about it. Do any of you guys know more about this than I do?

Anything the government can do, ten thousand angry hackers can undo. With glee and gusto.

That is not a joke, either, its a simple statement of fact.

Didn't SuperheroRalph already accomplish that on Literotica?

I hadn't thought about that. It's amazing what hackers can do. I know of websites where you can download code for all sorts of viruses. Most of them are only a line or two of code, but they are the equivalent making your operating system shoot itself in the foot.

I think that nearly everyone knows more about this than you but just for fucks' sake, I'll play along and express that IF everyone were AmiCoot, and easily influenced by his peers (this software has already infected Alisa Rosenbaum's site) then; and only then; could this nefarious plan come to fruition: OH! The sheer Villany of it all!!! Fake stats and factiods being posted for the unsuspecting ditto heads......Oh! the Agony!
You really need to think about these before ya spew, but, then, you wouldn't. Thinking doesn't become ya..........love them conspiracy theories........and all of them alts.....
Wait! I'm real, sure I am! I mean to say that I'm aware and connected - not someone's fantasy! No, I'm not, OR AM I?

Yeah, it's pretty easy to do on this site as well as all the others mentioned. Email addresses are a dime a dozen. Create a new email address for the new alt and there you go, no software required. (I'm sure some of you heard about the fiasco with last season's Dancing with the Stars and Bristol Palin...those wacky Tea Party-ers!)

But seriously, who really has that kind of time? Who really wants to keep track of all those email addresses and IDs? Well, besides the above mentioned SuperHeroRalph, I don't know of anyone else who would go through that much hassle.

And I think most people these days are very selective in who they add (or don't add) to their friends' lists so why even bother.

Um...

Oh yes, the gubmint is plotting to mind control the internets. As if the gubmint didn't have enough shit to do.

There are already alt creating spam- and phishing-bots for Facebook, Twitter, Linkedin, Myspace, Blogspot and BB code message boards (boards similar to this one, but Lit use anyother system called vBulletin). And probably for other systems too, but those are the ones I have heard about.

If someone wants to use them to manufacture political memes, start incrinimating rumors or fake public opinion, the tools are there already.

But it's not that easy. Meme-bots, as some call them, work because they only need to fool individuals. Spam a million people and you'll find ten thousand gullible morons to rob. For a political scam to work, you need not a one percent hit rate on people believing your lie, but over 50 percent.

I wasn't talking about the run-of-the-mill software that's been out there for years. I'm talking about an over-arching software, designed by Google and Apple, and others of that caliber, that can do whatever it wants as described above. The government has ordered this up. This is something to fear, I think. If you are hooked up to Facebook and Twitter, etc, you will have new friends and followers that do not exist, who have opinions counter yours. You will be overwhelmed by opinions counter to your opinions by "friends", who are actually your enemies. We exchange our opinions here, but this new software will overwhelm our own opinions with imaginary people. for the purpose of influencing and perverting public opinion in favor of what what the government wants you to believe. In effect, it subverts the first amendment. Whether you are on the left or right , you will be overwhelmed by contrary opinions by bots that are designed to pervert public opinion to the advantage of the government. When this in in the control of of the government, either democrat or republican, It undermines the !st Amendment.

The first thing you need to do is actually learn how people are seen on the internet. You can change your user name here as many times as you like but the people who run this site know who all your alts are. And no, I'm not going to tell you how they do it.

And a couple of small programs can tell others who know how to use them the same thing.

Oh, you mean like Fox news already does?

How about Glenn Beck? He's real good at overwhelming folk with false news and opinions. He doesn't need any fancy software to do it with.

The government has ordered this up.
I get such a kick out of this.

Is the government omnipotent and mastermindful and capable of carrying out covert conspiracies by the hundreds, or is it incompetent, weak and incapable in daily governance?

You guys can't have it both ways.

Ashley, huh?

What happened to your buxom bikini'd Barrista?

I hate seeing a fated love affair die!

Hahaha, your fist link totally proves my point. BOTH hackers AND security specialists are incredulous;
The move became a major topic last week following the release of emails from private security firm HBGary, which were disclosed after an attack by Wikileaks competitor and collaborator Cryptome.org. ...

At least one individual was surprised that the proposal was published openly.

"This is posted on open source. Are you ****ing serious?" wrote Greg Hoglund, owner of HBGary, in an email leaked by a group of hackers that broke into the security firm's network earlier this month. "Just curious, this particular one is pretty sensitive and I'm wondering why it was in the public domain," he added, in a separate email.

Something these folk aren't taking into consideration is the incredibly level of semiotic sensitivity that humans have. Different ISP's? Oh, puh-leeze. I could run two lit handles through two different proxies and many lit regulars would STILL know that they were the same person.

We humans are really, REALLY good at, to quote Neal Stephenson, "distilling meaning from the vapor of nuance."
